Core Insert and Outsert molding utilize the same thermoplastics, mold steel, mold structures, and injection-molding machines as conventional injection molding. In specific scenarios, vertical injection-molding machines may be employed, leveraging gravity to secure inserts during mold closure.
Core Insert molding bears similarities to overmolding by integrating different materials to enhance part properties. While slightly increasing molded part costs, this is typically balanced by eliminating manual post-molding operations. Lead time for overmolded and Core Insert molded parts is approximately 15 days—longer than standard injection molding but significantly faster than traditional Core Insert Molding methods.
Unlike overmolding's two-step process, Core Insert Molding is completed in a single operation: manual placement of threaded inserts, bushings, sleeves, or bosses into the mold, followed by mold closure, plastic injection, mold opening, and part ejection. This results in superior part strength and reliability.
Additional benefits include potential weight reduction when plastic parts with metal inserts replace all-metal components, and frequently lower overall costs compared to parts requiring assembly operations.
