ASTM A213/A213M-18 seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubes are designed for pressure-bearing heat transfer service where dimensional stability, clean internal surface condition, and reliable elevated-temperature performance matter. In this category, the most commonly specified austenitic grades include TP304, TP304L, TP316L, TP321, and TP347H, covering general heat-exchanger duty, welded low-carbon service, chloride-containing media, and higher-temperature superheater duty. ASTM A213/A213M-18 covers seamless boiler, superheater, and heat-exchanger tubes, with typical supplied sizes extending to 127 mm outside diameter and 0.4-12.7 mm wall thickness; all austenitic grades are supplied in the heat-treated condition.

Heat-treated austenitic structure for stable service
ASTM A213 requires austenitic grades to be supplied in the heat-treated condition. Standard minimum solution-treatment temperatures are typically 1040 °C for TP304, TP304L, TP316L, and TP321, while TP347H requires 1100 °C after cold working.
Grade-specific corrosion and temperature positioning
TP316L contains 2.0-3.0% Mo, improving resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with standard 18-8 grades; TP321 and TP347/347H are stabilized grades intended to reduce sensitization risk after exposure in the carbide precipitation range; TP347H is specifically used where higher creep strength is required above 537 °C / 1000°F.

Concern: How do you control sensitization and intergranular corrosion in welded or thermally cycled tube service?
We match grade selection to service condition rather than offering one grade for all duties. For welded condensers and exchangers, TP304L / TP316L reduce carbide precipitation risk through low carbon content. For prolonged elevated-temperature exposure, TP321 and TP347H provide stabilized chemistry; 347/347H is specifically recognized for strong resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to 427-816 °C, and 347H adds higher creep strength for hotter service.
Concern: How do you ensure dimensional control and inspection reliability on thin-wall seamless tubes?
For tighter dimensional demand, we recommend the cold-finished seamless route, which supports finer OD control than hot-finished tubing. Each tube can be supplied with hydrostatic test or nondestructive electric test, which is especially important for boiler, superheater, and exchanger circuits where leakage risk is unacceptable.
Concern: Which grade is better when the medium contains chlorides or when the duty temperature is high?
We separate the selection by failure mode. For chloride-bearing or mildly aggressive condensate, TP316L is preferred because its 2-3% molybdenum improves pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. For higher-temperature steam-side duty, TP321 and TP347H are better choices because stabilized chemistry and higher creep capability improve reliability under thermal exposure.

For this product type, polished seamless austenitic tubes are selected to improve cleanliness, reduce fouling retention, and maintain stable leak-tight performance under continuous temperature cycling. In chloride-sensitive or more corrosive condensate duty, TP316L is usually preferred; where steam-side temperature is higher, TP321 or TP347H may be specified.
