ASTM A213 seamless stainless steel U-bend tubes are manufactured for heat exchangers, condensers, boilers and superheaters operating under elevated temperature, pressure or corrosive process conditions. The tubes are produced by a seamless process, supplied hot-finished or cold-finished, solution heat-treated and formed to the required U-bend radius and leg length.
ASTM A213/A213M covers both ferritic alloy-steel grades and austenitic stainless-steel grades. For a product described specifically as a stainless steel U-bend tube, appropriate designations include TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L and TP321. Grade T12 should not be listed as stainless steel because it is a ferritic low-alloy steel. The active edition is ASTM A213/A213M-25.

ASTM A213 normally covers tubing from 3.2 mm inside diameter through 127 mm outside diameter, with wall thicknesses from 0.4 to 12.7 mm. Other dimensions may be supplied when all remaining specification requirements are satisfied.
The absence of a longitudinal weld eliminates weld-seam discontinuity from the tube pressure boundary. Every tube is manufactured through a seamless hot-finished or cold-finished route as required by ASTM A213.
The bend radius, tube pitch, leg length, tangent position and dimensional orientation are manufactured according to the heat-exchanger bundle drawing. Bend ovality and wall thinning can be measured at the extrados, intrados and neutral axis when specified.
TP304, TP304L, TP316, TP316L and TP321 tubes are normally solution heat-treated at a minimum temperature of approximately 1040°C, followed by rapid cooling. Heat treatment restores the required microstructure and helps control the effects of cold drawing and bending.
TP304 and TP304L are used for general industrial heat-transfer service. TP316 and TP316L contain 2.00-3.00% molybdenum and are selected where greater resistance to localized corrosion is required. TP321 is titanium-stabilized for service involving elevated-temperature exposure.
ASTM A213 requires mechanical and forming tests and requires each tube to undergo either a nondestructive electric test or a hydrostatic test.
A U-bend tube can satisfy the straight-tube specification but still create assembly or service problems when bending produces excessive extrados thinning or cross-sectional ovality.
We control the bending process through:
Project-specific acceptance limits for minimum bend-wall thickness and maximum ovality can be agreed before production.
ASTM A213 defines the material and heat-treatment requirements for the seamless tube, but it does not by itself define every U-bend geometry, stress-relief method or bundle fabrication requirement.
The purchase specification should therefore state:
This prevents uncontrolled local heating, surface oxidation and inconsistent mechanical properties in the bend area.
Each production lot can be controlled through a traceability route covering:
This reduces the risk of mixing grades, bend radii or heat-treatment conditions during heat-exchanger bundle assembly.
| Standard System | Applicable Standard | Scope |

| ASTM | ASTM A1016/A1016M | General requirements for ferritic alloy-steel and austenitic alloy-steel tubes |

| GB | GB/T 14976 | Stainless steel seamless tubes for fluid transport |
| GOST | GOST 9941 | Cold- and warm-deformed corrosion-resistant seamless steel tubes |
These standards are not automatically interchangeable. Grade equivalence, heat treatment, tolerances, testing frequency and certification requirements must be confirmed against the purchaser's specified code.
ASTM A213 TP316L seamless U-bend tubes can be installed in the tube bundle of a shell-and-tube chemical process heat exchanger. The U-shaped configuration connects the inlet and outlet flow paths without using a rear tube-sheet joint, while the molybdenum-bearing TP316L material provides improved localized-corrosion resistance compared with TP304L in many process environments.
Final material selection must consider chloride concentration, operating temperature, fluid velocity, crevice conditions, cleaning chemicals and the possibility of chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Chemical composition is given as mass percentage. Unlisted values are not intentionally specified unless required by the applicable ASTM edition or purchase order.

The grade limits above are based on published ASTM A213 technical tables. The governing values should always be verified against the edition stated in the purchase order.
Minimum room-temperature tensile properties for the five commonly specified austenitic grades are shown below.
| Grade | Tensile Strength, min. | Yield Strength, min. | Elongation, min. | Maximum Hardness | Minimum Solution-Treatment Temperature |

Mechanical-property requirements apply to the finished heat-treated tube. Local cold work introduced during U-bending may change hardness and residual stress in the bend area; therefore, post-bend treatment and bend-area testing should be specified when required by the heat-exchanger design. The listed tensile and hardness requirements are consistent with published ASTM A213 grade tables.
Typical published ASTM A213 outside-diameter tolerances include:
| Outside Diameter | OD Tolerance |
|---|---|
| Below 25.4 mm | ±0.10 mm |
| 25.4-38.1 mm | ±0.15 mm |
| Above 38.1 to below 50.8 mm | ±0.20 mm |
| 50.8 to below 63.5 mm | ±0.25 mm |
| 63.5 to below 76.2 mm | ±0.30 mm |
| 76.2-101.6 mm | ±0.38 mm |
| Above 101.6-190.5 mm | +0.38 / −0.64 mm |
For minimum-wall tubing, published tolerance summaries commonly identify a wall-thickness over-tolerance of +20%/−0 for tubes up to 38.1 mm OD and +22%/−0 for larger diameters. Final tolerances must be checked against the ordering basis, tube size and current ASTM A1016/A213 edition.
