GB/T 34109 42CrMo hot-expanded seamless steel tubes are large-diameter alloy steel tubes developed for manufacturing telescopic Kelly bars and drill rods used in rotary drilling machines. The product combines the hardenability and fatigue resistance of 42CrMo chromium-molybdenum steel with controlled hot-expansion, heat treatment, and straightening processes.
In this product description, "thermal expansion" refers to the hot-expansion manufacturing process, not to a special coefficient-of-thermal-expansion property. During production, a smaller seamless mother tube is locally heated and expanded over a forming mandrel to obtain the required large outside diameter. GB/T 34109-2017 is the current Chinese product standard specifically covering seamless steel tubes for rotary digging machine drill rods.

The original standard-development scope identified precision seamless tubes with outside diameters not exceeding 540 mm. The final standard regulates dimensions, shape, mass, technical requirements, testing, inspection, marking and certification.
After quenching and tempering under the appropriate section-size and testing conditions, reference properties for 42CrMo alloy structural steel include:
These values are reference properties for standardized test specimens and should not automatically be treated as guaranteed properties for every finished large-diameter tube. Final requirements must be confirmed against tube size, wall thickness, heat-treatment condition and the purchase specification.
The nominal ranges of 0.90-1.20% chromium and 0.15-0.25% molybdenum delay transformation during cooling and improve through-section hardenability compared with plain carbon steel. This is particularly important for thick-wall drill-rod tubes, where insufficient hardening can produce a large hardness difference between the outside surface and the wall center.
Rotary drilling Kelly bars are exposed to alternating torsion, bending, axial compression and local contact loads. Properly heat-treated 42CrMo provides a useful balance of yield strength, toughness and fatigue resistance for these combined loading conditions.
The hot-expansion process permits the production of large outside diameters that may not be economical through direct hot rolling. Subsequent sizing, heat treatment and straightening are required to control ovality, wall-thickness variation and residual stress.
42CrMo is a medium-carbon alloy steel rather than a readily weldable low-carbon structural steel. Welding of drive keys, locking strips or other drill-rod components normally requires:
A qualified welding procedure should be established using the actual tube chemistry, carbon equivalent, wall thickness and joint configuration.
Professional buyers commonly focus on eccentricity because hot expansion can magnify the original wall-thickness variation of the mother tube.
Our production control can include mother-tube eccentricity screening, controlled induction-heating temperature, stable pushing speed, matched expansion-ratio selection and multi-point ultrasonic wall-thickness measurement. Dimensional records can be supplied for the tube ends and intermediate positions when agreed at the quotation stage.
A technically appropriate expansion ratio is selected instead of relying on maximum possible enlargement. Excessive single-pass expansion may increase wall thinning, ovality and microstructural variation.
Large-diameter 42CrMo tubes can develop differences in cooling rate between the outer surface, inner surface and wall center.
The heat-treatment route should therefore be selected according to the actual outside diameter and wall thickness. Process control may include calibrated furnace-temperature recording, defined soaking time, controlled quenching-medium temperature and hardness mapping at representative tube positions.

Even when a tube meets ordinary commercial tolerances, excessive ovality or full-length bow can create interference between nested Kelly-bar sections.
For drill-rod tubes, final sizing and straightening should therefore be performed after the principal heat treatment. Outside diameter, ovality and straightness can be inspected using circumferential measurements, straightedges, laser systems or dedicated gauges.

GB/T 34109 is a finished-tube product standard, while standards such as GB/T 3077, EN 10083-3 and JIS G4053 primarily define alloy-steel grades and delivery conditions. Substitution should therefore be based on chemistry, hardenability, mechanical properties, heat-treatment condition and finished-tube requirements rather than grade-name similarity alone. GB/T 3077-2015 remains the current Chinese standard for alloy structural steels.
The tube is used as the main cylindrical body of a telescopic Kelly bar installed on a rotary drilling rig for bored-pile foundation construction.
Several tube sections are nested concentrically. Longitudinal drive keys and locking components transmit torque and axial force from one section to another. During operation, the Kelly bar transfers rotary torque and crowd force to the drilling tool while repeatedly extending and retracting.
