ASTM A513 DOM steel tube is a precision mechanical tubing product made by forming strip into ERW tube, welding, and then cold drawing over a mandrel to improve dimensional accuracy, surface consistency, concentricity, and mechanical performance. ASTM A513 covers ERW carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing in round, square, rectangular, and special shapes, while Type 5 DOM tubing is widely selected where tighter OD/ID control, cleaner internal surface, and more consistent wall distribution are required.
For ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM, typical OD tolerance examples from an industry tolerance sheet are +0.004/−0.005 in at 0.499 in OD, +0.005/−0.005 in at 0.500-1.699 in OD, and +0.006/−0.006 in at 1.700-2.099 in OD.
Wall Tolerance
DOM wall tolerance depends on OD and wall combination; representative values in the published A513 Type 5 DOM table are commonly in the ±0.002 to ±0.015 in range across listed combinations.
Straightness
ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM tolerance sheet shows 1/32 in per 3 ft.
Surface Condition
Smooth OD, improved ID finish after cold drawing; suitable for machining, bending, and mechanical assembly
Heat Treatment
As-drawn or stress-relieved DOM; other conditions subject to order agreement
Inspection
UT, ECT, flaring test, flattening test; additional dimensional and visual inspection available
Main Features
Cold-drawn from ERW mother tube The DOM route starts with ERW tubing and then draws the tube over a mandrel, which improves concentricity and wall uniformity compared with basic as-welded tubing.
Tighter dimensional control Published ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM tolerance sheets show OD control down to +0.004/ −0.005 in in smaller size ranges, with graded tolerance bands by diameter.
Stable mechanical performance in DOM stress-relieved condition For example, ASTM A513 Grade 1020 in DOM stress-relieved condition is listed at ≥ 450 MPa tensile strength, ≥380 MPa yield strength, and ≥10% elongation; Grade 1026 is listed at ≥ 515 MPa tensile strength, ≥460 MPa yield strength, and ≥10% elongation.
Verification beyond appearance Eddy current examination is used to detect pits, voids, inclusions, cracks, and abrupt dimensional variations in ferromagnetic tubing, while flattening tests are used to evaluate ductility and weld soundness.
Our Advantages
Buyer concern: Is the weld zone still a risk point after cold drawing? Our process begins with controlled ERW tube production and then uses cold drawing to refine geometry and surface quality. For quality release, we can combine UT/ECT with flaring and flattening tests, which directly address weld integrity and tube ductility concerns. Eddy current testing is specifically intended to locate discontinuities such as pits, voids, inclusions, cracks, or abrupt dimensional variation, and flattening testing is a standard way to reveal weld-related defects in tubing.
Buyer concern: Can the tube hold real precision for machining or bushing-type parts? DOM tubing is chosen because the cold-draw-over-mandrel route improves concentricity, wall uniformity, OD/ID consistency, and surface condition. That is why DOM is commonly preferred over ordinary ERW tubing when the part will be machined, honed, expanded, or assembled to a controlled fit.
Buyer concern: Can the supplier match actual project sizes rather than only catalog sizes? Your requested metric combinations such as 20 ×1.0/1.2/1.5/1.8/2.0 mm, 22 ×1.5/1.8/2.0/2.2/2.5 mm, and 25 ×1.0/1.2/1.5/1.8/2.0/2.2 mm fit the practical purchasing logic of precision mechanical tubing. With ASTM A513 covering round and special-shape mechanical tubing, project supply can be organized around specified OD, wall, cut length, and testing package instead of generic stock-only supply.
Applicable Standards
ASTM: ASTM A513/A513M -- ERW carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing; primary standard for this product.
EN: EN 10305-3 -- welded cold sized steel tubes for precision applications; closest European precision-welded tube framework.
JIS: JIS G3445 -- carbon steel tubes for mechanical/structural machine parts; commonly used Japanese reference for mechanical tubes.
GOST: GOST 32678-2014 -- seamless and welded cold-deformed steel pipes for general purposes; relevant Russian framework for cold-deformed welded tube supply.
GB: For Chinese sourcing communication, comparable precision-mechanical discussions are often aligned by agreed dimensional and inspection requirements rather than a perfect one-to-one GB substitute; project requirements should be confirmed on the PO and inspection plan.
Application Field
Automotive shock absorber cylinder tube This product is well suited to shock absorber cylinder applications because the part benefits from good concentricity, stable wall thickness, smooth internal surface, and reliable mechanical strength after cold drawing.
