Hydrogen has diverse applications beyond its current primary uses in oil refining and fertilizer production. To significantly contribute to clean energy transitions, hydrogen adoption must expand into sectors like transport, buildings, and power generation where it's currently underutilized.
Hydrogen can be extracted from fossil fuels, biomass, water, or a combination. Currently, natural gas accounts for about 75% of global hydrogen production (approximately 70 million tonnes annually), representing 6% of worldwide natural gas consumption. Coal follows as a significant source, particularly in China, with minimal production from oil and electricity.
Production costs from natural gas depend largely on gas prices and capital expenditures, with fuel costs constituting 45-75% of total production expenses. Regions with low gas prices (Middle East, Russia, North America) enjoy the most competitive hydrogen production costs.
While electrolytic hydrogen currently represents less than 0.1% of global production, declining renewable electricity costs (especially solar PV and wind) are driving growing interest. Converting all current hydrogen production to electrolysis would require 3,600 TWh annually—exceeding the EU's total electricity generation.
China's "3060 carbon peak and carbon neutrality" policy is accelerating clean energy development, with projections indicating renewable electrolysis could supply 70% of hydrogen by 2050. Hydrogen is particularly crucial for China's industrial sector, which accounts for 60% of final energy demand.
