Why does metal cutting and welding require oxygen?
The core function of oxygen in metal processing is to assist combustion and oxidation.
Cutting (especially oxyacetylene cutting and plasma cutting assistance): Oxygen is the key. The process is divided into two steps:


Flames (such as acetylene flames) first heat the metal to its ignition point (approximately 870 ° C for steel).
Then, a high-speed pure oxygen stream is sprayed onto the heating point, and the pure oxygen undergoes a violent oxidation reaction (combustion) with the high-temperature metal, generating metal oxides (slag) and releasing a large amount of heat. This high-speed oxygen flow simultaneously blows away the slag, forming a slit and achieving cutting.
The purity and pressure of oxygen directly determine the cutting speed and effectiveness. The higher the purity, the more intense the oxidation reaction, the faster the cutting speed, and the neater the incision.


Welding (such as oxyacetylene welding): Oxygen is mixed with combustible gases (such as acetylene, propane) and burned, producing a high-temperature flame to melt the base material and welding material. Oxygen is a necessary source of high-temperature heat here.


 To understand the advantages of VPSA, the first thing to look at is what it replaces:
* Bottled oxygen (oxygen cylinder):
High cost: The price of oxygen itself plus frequent transportation, loading and unloading, and rental costs.
Low efficiency: requires frequent replacement of gas cylinders, interrupting the production process.
Safety hazards: High pressure gas cylinders pose risks during storage and transportation and require strict management.
Purity fluctuation: When the pressure of the last bottle of gas is insufficient, the purity and pressure will decrease, affecting the quality of cutting/welding.


*Liquid oxygen (LOX):
Evaporation loss: Even if the storage tank is not used, it will naturally evaporate and lose a portion of oxygen (about 0.4% -0.6%) every day, resulting in waste.
Supply dependence: requires regular delivery of liquid oxygen tankers, affected by supply chain and weather conditions.
Initial investment: expensive vacuum insulated storage tanks and vaporization equipment need to be built.

 

 How can VPSA oxygen generator/plant solve these problems?
VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption) technology directly separates oxygen from air. The main components of air are 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. The core of VPSA equipment is to use molecular sieves (a material with strong adsorption ability for nitrogen) to adsorb nitrogen and obtain high concentration oxygen.

The workflow can be briefly summarized as follows:
Compressed air → Pre treatment (water removal, oil removal, dust removal) → Pressure swing adsorption tower (nitrogen is adsorbed, oxygen passes through) → Obtain finished oxygen (93% ± 3%) → Transport to the point of use after pressurization.
