Unlike closed impellers where the flow channel is enclosed between front and back shrouds, an open impeller has vanes attached to a hub with no front shroud. The vane tips run in close proximity to the pump casing or side plate, creating a running clearance typically 0.3–0.8 mm. This open-face design allows larger solids and stringy materials to pass through without clogging, making it the preferred choice for slurry, wastewater, and pulp handling.
A key advantage of the open impeller is that axial adjustment (by shimming the bearing housing or adjusting the back cover) can restore the original tip clearance as wear occurs, extending the impeller's service life without replacement.

Q1: Can I restore performance of a worn open impeller without replacing it?
Yes, if the vane profile is still intact and only the tip clearance has increased. Axial adjustment (shimming the bearing housing or adjusting the back cover) restores the original clearance. If vane edges are heavily eroded or the impeller diameter has worn by more than 5%, replacement is needed.
Q2: What material is best for abrasive mining slurry?
Ni-Hard or high-chrome iron (550+ HB) offers the best wear resistance. For extreme abrasion combined with corrosion, consider CD4MCu (25% Cr duplex stainless) which balances hardness with corrosion resistance.
Q3: What is the typical clearance adjustment range for an open impeller?
