The casing cover is the pressure-retaining component on the shaft side of the pump. It closes the pressure chamber, houses the mechanical seal or packing gland, and provides the stationary seal face mounting surface. Its seal chamber bore is the single most critical dimension — if the bore is worn, oval, or corroded, the mechanical seal will not seat correctly and will fail prematurely regardless of seal quality. Common failure modes include seal chamber bore wear from repeated seal replacement, flange face corrosion from gasket leakage, and stress cracking from pressure cycling.
The seal chamber bore should be inspected at every major overhaul. The table below shows acceptance limits:

Q1: Can a worn seal chamber bore be repaired, or must the cover be replaced?
If the bore is worn within 0.2–0.3 mm oversize, a seal chamber sleeve (stainless steel or duplex) can be pressed in and machined to restore the correct bore diameter. If the bore is oval by more than 0.15 mm or has deep corrosion pitting, replacement is the more reliable option.
Q2: What causes a casing cover flange face to leak?
Most common causes: a distorted flange face (from over-torquing bolts unevenly), a corroded or pitted gasket sealing surface, or a mismatch between the cover flange and the casing flange flatness. Always check flange face flatness with a straight edge before installing a new gasket.
Q3: Do you supply the casing cover with the mechanical seal pre-installed?
Yes, on request. We can supply the cover with the seal chamber machined, the stationary seal face fitted, and the bore surface finished to the seal manufacturer's specification. This is recommended for pumps in critical service where seal alignment is difficult to achieve on-site.
Q4: What material do you recommend for a high-pressure boiler feed pump casing cover?
Cast steel (WCB or WC6) with hard chrome plating in the seal chamber bore. Cast steel retains strength at elevated temperatures, and hard chrome resists wear from the seal rotary face at high surface speeds.
Q5: What warranty applies?
12 months from commissioning or 18 months from shipment. Covers material defects, dimensional non-conformance, and hydrostatic test integrity. Corrosion from incompatible media or mechanical damage during installation is excluded.
