Why the Casing Cover Matters

The casing cover is the pressure-retaining component on the shaft side of the pump. It closes the pressure chamber, houses the mechanical seal or packing gland, and provides the stationary seal face mounting surface. Its seal chamber bore is the single most critical dimension — if the bore is worn, oval, or corroded, the mechanical seal will not seat correctly and will fail prematurely regardless of seal quality. Common failure modes include seal chamber bore wear from repeated seal replacement, flange face corrosion from gasket leakage, and stress cracking from pressure cycling.

Seal Chamber Bore Inspection

The seal chamber bore should be inspected at every major overhaul. The table below shows acceptance limits:

Flange Face & Gasket Surface Condition

The flange face where the casing cover meets the pump casing must be flat and free of corrosion pitting to ensure a leak-free joint. Key checks:

  • Flatness — Check with a straight edge across the flange face. Gap > 0.10 mm under the straight edge indicates distortion. Re-face if the remaining flange thickness allows
  • Pitting depth — Pits deeper than 1.0 mm on the gasket sealing surface will cause leakage. Fill with epoxy filler and re-machine, or replace if widespread
  • Bolt hole condition — Threads should be intact. Damaged threads can be repaired with helical inserts if limited to one or two holes

How to Order
  1. Provide your SULZER pump model and casing cover part number from the nameplate or maintenance records
  2. If unavailable, measure the seal chamber bore diameter, flange bolt pattern (PCD and bolt size), and overall cover diameter. Photographs of the existing cover from multiple angles are helpful
  3. Select the material grade based on your service conditions
  4. Specify any extras: internal epoxy coating, hard chrome in seal bore, or NDT report package
  5. Submit enquiry — standard covers ship within 30 days; special materials or new patterns 45–60 days
Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can a worn seal chamber bore be repaired, or must the cover be replaced?

If the bore is worn within 0.2–0.3 mm oversize, a seal chamber sleeve (stainless steel or duplex) can be pressed in and machined to restore the correct bore diameter. If the bore is oval by more than 0.15 mm or has deep corrosion pitting, replacement is the more reliable option.

Q2: What causes a casing cover flange face to leak?

Most common causes: a distorted flange face (from over-torquing bolts unevenly), a corroded or pitted gasket sealing surface, or a mismatch between the cover flange and the casing flange flatness. Always check flange face flatness with a straight edge before installing a new gasket.

Q3: Do you supply the casing cover with the mechanical seal pre-installed?

Yes, on request. We can supply the cover with the seal chamber machined, the stationary seal face fitted, and the bore surface finished to the seal manufacturer's specification. This is recommended for pumps in critical service where seal alignment is difficult to achieve on-site.

Q4: What material do you recommend for a high-pressure boiler feed pump casing cover?

Cast steel (WCB or WC6) with hard chrome plating in the seal chamber bore. Cast steel retains strength at elevated temperatures, and hard chrome resists wear from the seal rotary face at high surface speeds.

Q5: What warranty applies?

12 months from commissioning or 18 months from shipment. Covers material defects, dimensional non-conformance, and hydrostatic test integrity. Corrosion from incompatible media or mechanical damage during installation is excluded.
