FLOWSERVE Volute Casing is the largest pressure-retaining component in the pump assembly and arguably the one that has the most influence on hydraulic performance. Its job is straightforward: capture the high-velocity stream thrown off by the impeller and convert that velocity into usable discharge pressure by letting the flow expand gradually along the spiral passage. But achieving that conversion efficiently depends on the internal contour being exactly right — a few millimeters off in the volute throat area can drop the pump's best-efficiency point by several percentage points.
In service, a volute casing sees three main threats. First, erosion: suspended solids in the pumped fluid act like sandpaper on the internal walls, especially near the cutwater where the flow changes direction abruptly. Second, corrosion: aggressive chemicals attack the casting material, thinning the wall over time until the pressure rating is compromised. Third, mechanical stress: pressure surges, thermal cycles, and piping loads can produce cracks, particularly in high-pressure or high-temperature applications. Recognizing which threat applies to your installation helps in selecting the right material and protective coating.
When we manufacture a replacement FLOWSERVE volute casing, the starting point is a FARO 3D laser scan of the original part (or a worn sample). The scan data is compared against the hydraulic design intent using CFD software, and any deviations caused by previous wear or casting shifts are corrected in the CAD model. The casting pattern is then made from this corrected geometry, ensuring the new casing delivers the same flow characteristics as the OEM part. After casting, the casing is machined on CNC equipment, hydrostatically tested at 1.5x working pressure, and inspected on a CMM for critical dimensions such as flange face flatness, bore concentricity, and bolt hole positions.
