In an open impeller, the vanes are attached to a back shroud with no front shroud covering the vane tips. This creates large, unobstructed flow passages that resist clogging and allow solids up to the vane height to pass through. The vane tips run in close proximity to the stationary casing wall or side liner, with a running clearance of 0.3–1.0 mm depending on pump size.
A key advantage over closed impellers: when the tip clearance increases from wear, the impeller can be repositioned axially (by shimming the bearing housing or adjusting the back cover) to restore the original clearance without replacement.

For ANDRITZ pumps handling fine, highly abrasive slurries, vane tip hardfacing extends the time between clearance adjustments by protecting the highest-wear area. Standard options:

Q1: How often should I adjust the tip clearance on an ANDRITZ open impeller?
For abrasive slurry service, check tip clearance every 1 000–2 000 running hours. Adjust when clearance exceeds 2.0 mm per side. For light-duty applications, annual inspection is sufficient. Each impeller typically allows 2–3 mm of total axial adjustment before replacement is needed.
Q2: What is the most cost-effective material for severe abrasion?
High-chrome white iron (Cr27%+, 600+ HB). While it costs 1.5–2× more than Ni-Hard, its wear life is typically 2–3× longer, giving a lower cost per operating hour in severe abrasive conditions.
Q3: Can you reverse-engineer an impeller from a broken or heavily worn sample?
Yes. Even if the vane profile is partially worn, FARO 3D scanning combined with hydraulic profile reconstruction (using vane root geometry and symmetry) can recover the original design within acceptable tolerance. We confirm the profile against CFD-predicted performance before casting.
Q4: Should I always use vane tip hardfacing on replacement impellers?
Not always. Hardfacing adds 10–20% to the impeller cost. It is justified when the impeller has a history of tip wear requiring frequent adjustment (every < 1 000 hours), or when the slurry contains hard abrasive particles (quartz, alumina, silica) above 100 µm in size.
Q5: What warranty applies?
12 months from commissioning or 18 months from shipment. Covers material defects, dimensional non-conformance, and casting quality. Wear in abrasive service is application-dependent and excluded.
