Tall silos, huge storage tanks and deep reservoirs push level instruments to their limits, where beam spread, signal loss and echo interference turn ordinary radars into unreliable guessers. Long-range level measurement is unforgiving. At 60 or 100 meters, a radar with a wide beam angle illuminates the tank wall, pipes and obstructions, creating false echoes that corrupt the reading. Low-frequency radars also lose accuracy at extreme distances, and their large antennas are heavy and expensive to mount on tall silos.
