The Hybrid Ultrasonic Flowmeter Combines Dual Technologies To Accurately Measure Fluid Flow

The hybrid ultrasonic flowmeter is a compound flow measurement instrument that combines the Doppler method and the time difference of propagation method (time difference method). It can automatically switch the measurement mode according to the fluid state to adapt to a wider range of industrial application scenarios.

Why do we need a hybrid solution? What problems does it solve?

It perfectly addresses the limitations of single-principle flowmeters in complex operating conditions:

Dealing with changes in fluid properties:
  • Scenario: In a water treatment process, the raw water is very dirty (suitable for Doppler), but becomes clear after treatment (suitable for time difference method). Using a single-principle flowmeter, either it cannot measure in the initial stage or it cannot measure in the later stage.
  • Hybrid solution: Fully automatic adaptation throughout the process, seamless switching, ensuring measurement from start to finish.
Overcoming the "bubble interference" problem:
  • Scenario: In a clean pipeline pumping system, bubbles may occasionally be mixed in. This is a fatal interference for the time difference method, causing the measured value to fluctuate wildly or fail.
  • Hybrid solution: When bubbles appear and cause the time difference method signal to deteriorate, the system immediately switches to the Doppler method (bubbles themselves are excellent scatterers) for measurement, maintaining the stability of the output.
Enhancing reliability and credibility:
  • The two methods serve as backups for each other. If one system fails, the other can still work, significantly enhancing system reliability.
  • The data cross-comparison function can effectively identify anomalies and prevent the provision of incorrect data due to a single sensor failure.

  • Extremely wide medium adaptability: It can handle everything from clean tap water to turbid sewage, from bubble-free to gas-containing liquids.
  • High reliability: It has redundant measurement capabilities, reducing the risk of downtime.

  • Simplified selection: When facing possible changes in working conditions, there is no need to worry about choosing between time difference method and Doppler method; a hybrid instrument can handle all situations.
  • Multiple pipe materials: It supports plastic (PVC, FRP), metal (steel pipe, stainless steel pipe), and lined pipes (asphalt, mortar).

  1. Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants: Inlet (Doppler mode as the main option) -> Process (Possible variations) -> Outlet (Time Difference mode as the main option). One instrument can cover the entire process.
  2. Circulating Cooling Water Systems: Initially, the system is clean, suitable for Time Difference method; after operation, pipe corrosion and scaling occur, generating impurities, and Doppler method is introduced.
  3. Partially Full Pipe Flow Measurement: Some advanced open channel/partially full pipe flow meters adopt a hybrid principle, using Time Difference method to measure liquid level and Doppler method to measure flow velocity.
