| High Light | FMCW Radar Level Gauge ,Radar Level Gauge IP67 ,80 Ghz Radar Level Transmitter | ||
Chemical vessels, distillation tanks and sewage basins share one problem: the atmosphere above the liquid is hostile, and the level value must still be exact. The 80GHz FMCW radar level gauge answers with ±1mm accuracy, a 0.05-100 m range, Exia/Exd explosion-proof certification and an IP67 housing built for corrosive liquids, steam and foam.
Process conditions decide which level technology survives. In sulfuration tanks, distillation columns and chemical storage, the liquid is corrosive, the vapor is aggressive, and foam or steam can hide the true surface from ordinary instruments. Traditional contact and ultrasonic methods fail through corrosion, coating and echo loss, forcing frequent maintenance and risky readings. An 80GHz FMCW radar measures without touching the medium, and its high frequency creates a narrow, focused beam that penetrates steam and foam to lock onto the real surface. With ±1mm accuracy, you get level data precise enough for tight process control and reliable inventory, while the Exia/Exd certified design allows installation in hazardous areas where unrated instruments are prohibited.
Unlike pulse radar, which times individual echoes, FMCW radar transmits a continuous microwave signal whose frequency is modulated over time. The signal reflects from the product surface and returns to the antenna, where the electronics compare the transmitted and received frequencies. The frequency difference is directly proportional to the distance to the surface, so the level is calculated with very high resolution. Operating at 80GHz with a 42mm PTFE lens antenna and a 3-degree beam angle, the gauge concentrates energy on the surface below it, avoiding false echoes from vessel walls and internals. The result is ±1mm accuracy below 35 m and ±5mm up to 100 m, delivered over 4-20 mA, HART or RS485 to your control system.
| Working Condition | Typical Failure | Why Ordinary Instruments Fail | 80GHz FMCW Solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosive liquids with aggressive vapor | Sensor corrosion, coating, contamination | Contact probes attacked by media | Non-contact PTFE lens antenna, no wetted probe |
| Steam, foam and turbulent surfaces | Echo loss, unstable readings | Wide beams scattered by vapor | 80GHz narrow beam penetrates steam and foam |

Q1: What makes FMCW radar more accurate than pulse radar?
FMCW (frequency-modulated continuous wave) radar transmits a continuous signal whose frequency changes linearly over time, and measures the frequency difference between the transmitted and reflected signals. This frequency difference is proportional to the distance, and because frequency can be measured with extremely high precision, FMCW achieves much higher resolution than pulse radar, which relies on timing short pulses. In practice, this gives the 80GHz FMCW gauge ±1mm accuracy below 35 meters, compared with the ±3mm or more typical of pulse instruments. FMCW also evaluates the echo continuously rather than sampling it, providing more stable readings on turbulent and moving surfaces.
Q2: Why is 80GHz frequency better for difficult process conditions?
The 80GHz band offers three practical advantages. First, the beam angle is very narrow, around 3 degrees with the 42mm lens antenna, so the signal concentrates on the product surface and avoids false echoes from vessel walls, pipes and agitators. Second, high-frequency signals reflect strongly even from low-dielectric and turbulent media, giving a cleaner echo. Third, the small lens antenna fits through existing nozzles and is lighter to mount. These properties let the gauge measure reliably through steam, foam and corrosive vapor where lower-frequency radars lose the echo or pick up interference.
Q3: What explosion-proof certifications does the gauge carry?
The 80GHz FMCW radar level gauge is available with dual explosion-proof certification: Exia IIC T6 Ga, the intrinsically safe rating suitable for Zone 0 hazardous areas, and Exd IIC T6 Gb, the flameproof enclosure rating for Zone 1. Both ratings cover IIC gas groups and T6 temperature class, allowing installation on vessels containing flammable liquids and vapors in chemical and petrochemical plants. When ordering, specify your hazardous area classification and the required certification, and our engineers will confirm the correct version and documentation for your region and application.
Q4: What is the maximum measuring range and accuracy at range?
The gauge measures from 0.05 meters up to 100 meters, with standard range options of 10, 20, 30, 60 and 100 meters. Accuracy is ±1mm when the range is below 35 meters, and ±5mm for ranges between 35 and 100 meters. This means short and medium tanks receive millimeter-level precision for tight process control, while very tall vessels still achieve excellent accuracy at extreme distances. The 0.05-meter minimum range also allows measurement in shallow vessels where many radars have a large blind zone. Select the range option that matches your vessel height when ordering.
Q5: What support and customization do you offer?
As the manufacturer, we provide direct engineering support including range selection, flange sizing, antenna material choice and installation guidance. Customization options include measuring range, process connection from DN50, housing material (cast aluminum or 304 stainless steel), output protocol, power supply configuration, explosion-proof certification, labeling and packaging, plus OEM and ODM programs. With monthly supply capacity and factory calibration before shipment, we support both single-vessel projects and complete plant rollouts. Contact us with your vessel dimensions, media and hazardous area details for a tailored recommendation and quotation.
When the liquid is corrosive, the vapor is aggressive and the level must still be exact, the 80GHz FMCW radar level gauge delivers: ±1mm accuracy, a 100-meter range, dual Exia/Exd explosion-proof certification and an IP67 housing with PTFE lens antenna. It measures through steam and foam that defeat ordinary instruments, and its narrow 80GHz beam ignores the false echoes that confuse wider-beam radars. As the manufacturer, you receive factory calibration, certification-matched configuration and direct engineering support. Choose the FMCW gauge that turns your harshest vessel into your most reliable measurement.
