Odorless lanolin is a pale yellow, pliable grease extracted from wool with a faint characteristic odor. It is a transparent or nearly transparent yellow liquid when melted. It is insoluble in water and to a lesser extent in hot ethanol. Odorless lanolin is chemically classified as a wax and is a complex mixture of 33 high molecular weight alcohols (mainly sterols) and 36 natural esters of fatty acids with polyesters. Its ester content is at least 98% and the ratio of fatty alcohols to fatty acids is

close to 50/50.

Cosmetics:Lanolin is an extremely effective emollient that restores and maintains the all-important hydration of the stratum corneum (maintenance of moisture balance), thus preventing dry and chapped skin. Moreover, it does not interfere with the skin's normal respiratory barrier. Lanolin has been shown to build up water content in the skin to 10-30% of normal levels by slowing epidermal transdermal water loss. Lanolin has the unique property of absorbing twice its own weight in water and has the physical property of increasing adhesion to dry skin and forming a protective film on the skin. When used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations, lanolin is miscible with most esters and waxes and is often applied with water in very stable W/O emulsions.
