Function: The MRI/CT Hybrid Non-Magnetic Wheelchair is designed for imaging departments that perform both MRI and CT scans, allowing the same wheelchair to be used in both environments. The chair is constructed from materials that are both non-magnetic (for MRI) and radiolucent (for CT) – carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer with no metal components other than brass fasteners. The seat and backrest are fully radiolucent, meaning they do not create artifacts on CT images. The chair also includes a removable CT-compatible headrest that can be positioned to support the patient's head during a head CT. The wheelchair can be wheeled directly into the CT scanner (up to the gantry) and the patient can remain seated during the scan if the anatomy of interest allows. For patients who cannot lie down, this enables CT imaging in a seated position.
Application: This wheelchair is for imaging facilities that have both MRI and CT scanners and want to standardize on a single wheelchair model for both modalities. Using the same wheelchair reduces equipment costs and simplifies staff training. The chair is particularly useful for patients who need both MRI and CT in a single visit – for example, a stroke patient who needs a non-contrast CT to rule out hemorrhage followed by an MRI to evaluate ischemic stroke. The patient can remain in the same wheelchair for both scans, reducing handling and transfer time. The chair is also used for CT-guided interventions (e.g., biopsies) in patients who cannot lie flat; the patient sits in the chair, which is positioned at the CT gantry, and the intervention is performed under CT guidance.
