Function:

The Stroke/Heavy-Duty Transport MRI Wheelchair is designed for patients with hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body) following a stroke or other neurological injury. The chair features asymmetric controls: the brake lever on the patient’s weak side is larger and requires less force to operate, while the push rim on the weak side has a one-way ratchet that prevents the wheel from rolling backward (preventing the patient’s weak arm from being pulled backward). The chair also includes a swing-away footrest on the weak side that can be positioned to support the patient’s foot in a neutral position, reducing spasticity. The armrest on the weak side is extended forward to provide additional support for the patient’s forearm. The seat cushion has a slightly elevated edge on the weak side to prevent the patient from sliding toward the weak side.

This wheelchair is specifically for stroke patients who need MRI to evaluate the extent of their stroke or to guide rehabilitation. Stroke patients often have difficulty using standard wheelchairs because their weak side cannot operate the brakes or push rims effectively.
