Function: The Amputee Non-Magnetic MRI Wheelchair is specifically designed for patients with lower limb amputations, particularly those with above-knee (transfemoral) amputations. Standard wheelchairs have a seat depth that is too long for amputees, causing the residual limb to not reach the footrest and creating a pressure point at the edge of the seat. This chair has an adjustable seat depth (from 14 to 18 inches) and a removable footrest on the amputated side, allowing the residual limb to hang freely without contacting the footrest. The seat cushion is contoured to accommodate the shape of the residual limb, with a shallower angle on the amputated side. The chair also includes an optional prosthetic leg holder – a plastic cradle that attaches to the frame and holds the patient’s prosthesis during transport.
Application: This wheelchair is used in hospitals and MRI centers that serve amputee patients, including those with dysvascular amputations (diabetes, peripheral artery disease), traumatic amputations, or congenital limb deficiencies. Amputee patients often require MRI of the residual limb (to evaluate for neuromas, bone spurs, or infection) or of other body parts unrelated to the amputation. Standard wheelchairs are uncomfortable and can cause skin breakdown at the end of the residual limb. This chair allows the patient to be transported comfortably and safely to the MRI suite. The prosthetic leg holder keeps the prosthesis from being left behind or placed on the floor where it could be contaminated or lost.
