1000BASE-T may also be called Gigabit Ethernet, 1000BaseT, GbE, 1 GigE or simply Gigabit. It is located at the first layer of the open systems interconnection model, the physical layer. Is a networking standard defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1999 based on the 802.3ab standard. The "1000" in 1000BASE-T refers to a transmission speed of 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). "BASE" indicates that the standard operates in Ethernet baseband signaling mode, and "T" indicates using twisted pair copper cables.
1000BASE-T is Gigabit Ethernet - 1 Gigabit is 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps) over copper cable, using four pairs of Category 5 (Cat5) unshielded twisted pair (UTP) to achieve gigabit data rates. 1000BASE-T can be used in the data center for server interconnect or network switch uplinks, or directly with the desktop. One of the great advantages of 1000BASE-T is that it can use existing copper cabling rather than having to rewire it with fiber optics or new-generation cables.
1000BASE-T is the most common networking standard. Gigabit Ethernet quickly replaced older Ethernet standards such as Ethernet (10BASE-T, 10 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T, 100 Mbps) as the de facto standard for network equipment. Almost all modern devices support it, providing good enough performance for most common applications. 1000BASE-T is used for general server interconnect and endpoint client connections.
