The application of hot melt road marking paint involves a series of steps to ensure the lines are durable, clear, and safe. This type of thermoplastic paint is typically used for road lines, pedestrian crossings, arrows, and symbols on highways, streets, and parking lots. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of how it's applied:

1. Surface Preparation

• Cleaning the Surface:
  • The road surface must be free from dirt, oil, grease, and loose debris. Use a broom, pressure washer, or mechanical cleaner to clear the area. This is critical to ensure that the paint adheres properly.
  • In some cases, if the road surface has existing markings, these should be removed to avoid interference with the new markings.
• Drying the Surface:
  • Ensure that the road is dry before applying the paint, as moisture can affect the adhesion and performance of the hot melt paint.

2. Heating the Paint

• Melting the Paint:
  • Hot melt road marking paint is solid at room temperature and needs to be heated to a liquid form. This is typically done in a melting pot or a heated tank.
  • The paint is heated to a temperature between 180°C to 200°C (356°F to 392°F). It’s essential to maintain the correct temperature to avoid overheating, which can degrade the paint or cause it to be applied unevenly.
• Consistency:
  • Once melted, the paint should have a consistent viscosity that allows it to be applied evenly. It must be fluid enough to spread but not too thin, or it will not form proper markings.

3. Application Process

• Using the Road Marking Machine:
  • A road marking machine (which can be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic) is typically used to apply the hot melt paint. These machines are designed to spread the molten paint in a controlled manner.
  • The machine usually has a spray system or roller applicator that distributes the melted paint onto the surface. The applicator will move across the road at a constant speed to create even lines.
• Line Width and Thickness:
  • You can adjust the settings of the machine to control the width and thickness of the road markings. For example, solid lines, dashed lines, or symbols may require different settings.
  • Typically, the lines are about 100-150 mm wide for normal road markings, though this can vary depending on the specifications.
• Thermoplastic Paint Additives:
  • Sometimes, additives such as glass beads are mixed into the paint before application or sprinkled on top to make the markings more reflective at night. These glass beads help improve the visibility of the lines under headlights.

4. Cooling and Solidification

• Rapid Cooling:
  • Once applied, hot melt paint begins to cool and solidify quickly, typically within a few minutes. As it cools, it hardens into a durable and skid-resistant surface.
• Curing:
  • Full curing (hardening to its maximum strength) may take a few hours, depending on weather conditions like air temperature and humidity. However, traffic can usually pass over the freshly marked area after a short time to avoid damage to the markings.
• Drying Time:
  • If the environment is too humid or cold, drying may take longer. Ideal conditions are dry, warm days.

5. Post-Application

• Check the Markings:
  • Inspect the markings to ensure the application is uniform and that there are no issues like bubbling, incomplete lines, or excess thickness. Correct any issues immediately before they harden.
• Traffic Control:
  • Ensure that traffic is rerouted or does not pass over the fresh markings until they are completely solidified. Premature traffic movement can cause the paint to smudge, reducing the effectiveness and appearance of the markings.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

• Cleaning the Equipment:
  • After finishing the application, it’s essential to clean the marking machine and the paint supply system to prevent the paint from hardening inside the machine.
  • Use a suitable solvent to clean the equipment while the paint is still warm. Once the paint has cooled, it becomes difficult to remove.

Composition Ingredients
 

- Synthetic Resin: It is the main component of thermoplastic road marking paint, such as rosin and its derivative modified resins, petroleum resins, polyester resins, etc. It has adhesive properties and quick-drying characteristics, enabling the paint to adhere to the road surface and bond through hot melting.
- Glass Beads: Usually with a diameter of 0.1-1.4 millimeters, they are colorless and transparent. They can improve the recognizability of the markings at night, enhance brightness and durability, and also protect the markings from wear.
- Pigments: Mainly white and yellow, such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, heat-resistant chrome yellow, organic yellow pigments, iron oxide, etc., which play a role in coloring and covering.
- Fillers: Such as calcium carbonate, sand, etc., which can ensure the mechanical strength, wear resistance, and color of the paint. The particle size of the fillers will affect the fluidity, sedimentation degree, and surface finishing of the paint.
- Additives: They can increase the plasticity of the coating, making it resistant to sedimentation, pollution, and fading.
