Do different sizes of glass beads affect their performance in road marking?
 
Yes, different sizes of glass beads do affect their performance in road marking.
Smaller glass beads (around 0.1 - 0.4 mm in diameter) can provide a smoother surface texture to the road marking. However, they may not have as high a retro - reflectivity as larger beads because they have less surface area to reflect light back to the driver's eyes.
Larger glass beads (about 0.6 - 1.0 mm) generally have better retro - reflectivity. They can effectively reflect light from vehicle headlights over a greater distance and at wider angles. But if they are too large, they may protrude too much from the road - marking material, leading to a less smooth surface and a higher risk of being dislodged by traffic.
The ideal size range for glass beads used in road marking is usually between 0.4 - 0.85 mm, as this provides a good balance between retro - reflectivity and surface durability.
