The Challenge — Door Handles Are High-Volume, Low-Margin, Finish-Sensitive
An automated two-station CNC cell turns door handle polishing from a labor bottleneck into a continuous, predictable process.
Why Automated Two Stations?
Two stations mean an optimal division of labor: the surface finishing process for door handles essentially consists of two steps—coarse polishing (base prep) and fine polishing (finishing). A two-station setup completes both in a single pass, requiring lower investment and offering a faster return on investment (ROI) compared to four-station systems.
Automated loading and unloading is the core: Door handles have regular shapes and allow for batch feeding; they are ideal for tray or vibratory feeding combined with automatic unloading, truly enabling "continuous machine operation with minimal human oversight."
Cycle times suited for mass production: With a cycle time of 8-20 seconds per piece and alternating operation between the two stations, equipment utilization is high, driving the cost per unit down to just 1/5-1/8 of manual processing costs.
Rapid changeover for multiple specifications: Dedicated fixtures and programs exist for levers, knobs, and pull handles; changeover takes less than 10 minutes, allowing for mixed-model production without stopping the line.
Compatibility across the door handle product family: A single production line can handle the three mainstream types—doorknobs, lever handles, and pull handles.

What makes this "automated" — do we still need operators?
The machine loads, polishes and unloads automatically. One operator tops up the feeder and removes finished bins — typically one person runs two cells.
Can it do both lever handles and round knobs?
Yes. Each shape has a dedicated fixture and stored program; changeover takes under 10 minutes, so mixed lever/knob/pull production runs without stopping.
Our handles go to electroplating after polishing — will the surface be consistent enough?
Yes. Force-controlled polishing keeps material removal uniform, so the pre-plate surface is consistent batch to batch — reducing plating defects and color mismatch.
What about cast handles with gate marks?
Add the deburring option at Station 1 — gates and mold lines are removed in the same pass before the finishing buff.
Can you give a cycle time for our specific handle?
Send the part drawing and target finish — we return cycle time, consumables plan and payback within 48 hours.
What if our order volume changes seasonally?
The cell scales with demand: run one shift, two shifts, or add a second machine. Labor cost follows output automatically — no idle payroll.
