Force-Controlled Robotic Faucet Polishing Machine For Stainless Steel Faucet
Every stainless steel faucet has at least one surface that defeats a fixed-force polishing approach. The thin spout wall that bows when the wheel pushes too hard. The sharp transition from the arch to the shank where the local surface normal rotates 40° in 20 mm and a rigid wheel either loses contact or digs in. The inner fillet at the base where the wheel must decrease force to avoid marking the mounting face. The weld zone where material hardness changes across [TBC] mm and the same wheel pressure that blends the seam correctly on one faucet removes too much from the next.
The LR-POLISH-FC-SS is a force-controlled robotic faucet polishing machine for stainless steel. It carries a wrist-mounted force/torque sensor that samples contact force at [TBC] Hz and adjusts the robot path in real time — the wheel always applies the correct force for the surface it is currently on, regardless of geometry, wall thickness, or casting-to-casting variation. The result is a polished stainless faucet where every zone — arch, shank, transition, weld area, base flange — finishes at the same Ra, because every zone was polished at the force it actually needed.
Proprietary Selling Points
1. Wrist-mounted force/torque sensor — the wheel responds to the surface, not the programme
The defining hardware of the LR-POLISH-FC-SS is the 6-axis force/torque sensor mounted between the robot wrist and the polishing tool. At [TBC] Hz, it measures actual contact force in all six degrees of freedom and feeds the measurement back to the motion controller, which adjusts the robot path in real time:
If the spout wall deflects under the wheel → measured force drops → robot advances to restore target force → wall re-contacts → force stabilises. All within [TBC] ms.
If the wheel encounters the stiffer weld zone → measured force rises → robot retracts slightly → target force restored → weld material is not over-removed.
If wheel wear reduces the effective cutting force → measured force drops → robot compensates by advancing the head — the last faucet in a shift polishes at the same Ra as the first.
This is what force control means in practice: the surface drives the machine, not the programme.
2. Thin-wall spout deflection prevention — the arch polishes flat
The spout wall of a stainless faucet is typically 1.0-2.5 mm thick — thin enough to deflect under polishing wheel contact if force is not actively managed. The LR-POLISH-FC-SS addresses this through two mechanisms working together:
Mechanism 1 — Force ceiling per zone: The spout arch zone carries a force ceiling ([TBC] N max) set below the wall's deflection threshold. Even if the wheel encounters a harder patch (weld zone, casting inclusion), the force ceiling prevents the robot from pushing harder than the wall can absorb.
Mechanism 2 — Thin-wall compliant backstop: A spring-loaded support bar bears against the inner face of the spout opposite the polishing wheel contact zone. It provides counter-reaction to the polishing force without over-constraining the part. The wall is supported; the wheel can press with confidence; the surface finishes flat.
Result: the spout arch finishes flat and uniform — not wavy from skip marks, not over-polished from the robot compensating for a deflected surface by pressing harder.
Spout wall thickness range: [TBC] mm; deflection under F_max: [TBC] µm (within polishing tolerance); backstop compliance: [TBC] N.
3. Base fillet and flange face — force reduction, datum protection
The inner base fillet and flange mating face are geometry-critical surfaces. The fillet radius is [TBC] mm — narrow enough that a standard polishing wheel contacts the adjacent faces simultaneously if force is not reduced at entry. The flange face is a mounting datum that must not be marked.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "force-controlled" mean for faucet polishing — isn't all robot polishing controlled?
Standard path-following robots execute a fixed motion at a fixed speed — they apply whatever force results from that motion, but they do not measure or control it. Force-controlled means a wrist-mounted sensor measures actual contact force at [TBC] Hz and the robot adjusts its path in real time to maintain the target force at every surface point. If the wall deflects, the sensor detects the force drop and the robot advances to restore contact. If the wheel hits the stiffer weld zone, the sensor detects the force rise and the robot retracts to prevent over-removal. The surface drives the machine — not the other way around.
Our spout wall is 1.5 mm stainless — will the machine bow it?
No. The spout arch zone has a force ceiling set below your wall's deflection threshold, confirmed against your part drawing before programming. Additionally, the thin-wall compliant backstop bears against the inner spout face at the same zone the wheel contacts the outer face — the wall is supported from both sides. Force ceiling alone prevents deflection; the backstop provides a physical counter-reaction. We confirm the force ceiling on your sample faucets during the demo trial.
The arch-to-shank transition always looks dull after plating on our current line. What causes this?
This is caused by the wheel losing contact (or making wrong-angle contact) at the normal-rotation zone of the transition. When the surface normal rotates rapidly and the wheel approach angle does not rotate with it, the wheel either lifts off (leaving a dull unhit strip) or stays in contact at the wrong angle (burnishing instead of polishing — the surface looks polished but has a different Ra to the adjacent zones). Phase T of the LR-POLISH-FC-SS handles the transition with a force-ramp re-angle motion that keeps contact force and contact geometry correct through the full normal-rotation range.
