Rock Wool Boards With Sound Absorption Creating Quiet Indoor Environments
Beyond excellent thermal insulation, fire resistance and durability, rock wool boards are widely used for acoustic noise reduction, thanks to their outstanding noise absorption. This ability comes from their unique physical structure and acoustic mechanism, which effectively weakens sound wave propagation and improves environmental sound quality.
Performance
After high-temperature melting and fiberization, rock wool boards form three-dimensional porous structures (porosity over 90%, mostly micron-level pores) via random fiber interweaving. When sound waves hit, three key processes occur: sound waves reflect, refract and rub against fibers, turning sound energy into heat; air columns in pores vibrate, consuming energy via air molecule viscosity; low-frequency waves trigger fiber resonance, absorbing low-frequency noise. This synergy gives them a 0.7-0.9 sound absorption coefficient for medium-high frequency noise (1000-4000Hz, per GB/T 20247-2006) and some low-frequency absorption, with stable, wide-ranging performance.
Their noise absorption can be optimized by adjusting density and thickness: low-density (40-80kg/m³) and thick (50-150mm) boards suit indoor acoustic decoration for medium-high frequency noise; high-density (100-200kg/m³) ones work for industrial equipment or building insulation, blocking low-frequency vibration. They also come in shapes like flat, curved or wedge plates for complex installations.
Rock wool boards act as core filling in sound insulation systems, combining with gypsum or metal plates for "absorption-insulation" integration. Filling them in double-layer walls or ceilings boosts sound insulation by 10-15dB(A), blocking neighborhood or traffic noise. Unlike moisture/aging-prone organic materials (e.g., sponges), their inorganic composition ensures long-term stability: sound absorption stays nearly unchanged at ≤80% humidity, recovers fully after drying, and lasts over 25 years without replacement.
Application
In applications, they fill residential partition walls, ceilings and floors to absorb domestic noise, meeting GB 50118 standards (e.g., 50mm, 80kg/m³ boards with double gypsum boards reach ≥45dB(A)). In public buildings, they become ceiling/wall panels to reduce reverberation (0.8-1.2s for conference rooms) and improve sound quality. For industry, they make sound insulation covers for fans or pumps (e.g., 100mm, 120kg/m³ boards cut noise from 95dB(A) to <70dB(A), complying with GB 12348-2022) and line workshop walls/roofs to protect workers’ hearing.
In traffic, they are core materials in highway sound barriers, cutting residential noise by 15-25dB(A). In subways/tunnels, fire-resistant panels absorb train noise while ensuring safety. They also insulate data center or substation control rooms (saving AC energy) and fill ship/railway carriage interlayers to enhance comfort and meet fire standards.
