Safe And Non-toxic Rock Wool Boards Suitable For Construction And Decoration

The safety and non-toxicity of rock wool boards are among their core advantages distinguishing them from many chemical synthetic building materials. This characteristic runs through the entire life cycle of the material itself, production and processing, and long-term use, which can be elaborated in detail from the following dimensions.

Safety

The core raw materials of rock wool boards are natural volcanic rocks and mineral materials such as basalt, dolomite, and diabase. These components are all stable inorganic substances existing in nature, and they do not contain toxic and harmful chemical substances such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, and volatile organic compounds, nor do they contain carcinogenic or teratogenic components such as asbestos and heavy metals. Unlike organic insulation materials such as polystyrene and polyurethane, rock wool boards avoid the problem of "innate toxicity" from the source. Organic materials need to add chemical auxiliaries such as foaming agents and adhesives during production, which are prone to residual harmful substances. However, the main components of rock wool are oxides such as silicon, aluminum, and calcium, which have stable chemical properties and will not cause toxic harm to the human body due to their own decomposition or volatilization.​

At the same time, the production process of rock wool boards further ensures their non-toxicity. After the raw materials are melted at a high temperature of over 1500℃, they are made into fibers by high-speed centrifugation and then solidified and formed. The entire process relies on physical changes and does not require the addition of any toxic chemical binders or modifiers. A small amount of fiber dust generated during the production process is collected and treated by the workshop dust removal system and will not enter the finished product. Therefore, the finished rock wool board has no basis for releasing toxic substances.​

Friendly to Both Humans and the Environment​

When used indoors (such as partition walls, ceilings, and floor insulation) or outdoors (external wall and roof insulation), rock wool boards will not release toxic gases or harmful substances under normal or high-temperature conditions. At room temperature, their chemical structure is stable, with no volatile components escaping, which will not cause indoor air pollution, nor will it cause health problems such as skin irritation and respiratory infections for construction workers or residents in contact with them.​

Even under extreme high-temperature conditions such as fires, rock wool boards will not burn to produce highly toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and cyanide like organic materials. This is crucial in building fire safety. According to fire statistics, more than 80% of casualties in fires are caused by inhalation of toxic gases. However, the inorganic nature of rock wool boards only causes slight shrinkage in intense fires without releasing toxic smoke, which can retain a safe air environment for personnel evacuation. This is also an important reason why they are widely used in densely populated places such as hospitals, schools, and residential buildings.​

Other Advantages

Rock wool boards are lightweight and easy to cut. During construction, there is no need to use equipment that is prone to producing toxic pollutants such as electric saws and spray guns. Cutting can be completed only with a utility knife or box cutter, reducing dust pollution and chemical volatile emissions during the construction process. For construction workers, as long as they wear regular dust masks (to avoid inhaling a small amount of fiber dust), they can operate safely without long-term occupational health risks. Unlike traditional asbestos products, rock wool fibers are thicker and more tough, and will not be as thin as asbestos fibers to penetrate the alveoli. Moreover, in modern rock wool production, the fiber shedding rate has been reduced through process optimization, further improving construction safety.​
