Composition: Both 316 and 316L stainless steel are austenitic stainless steels with a similar chemical composition. They contain approximately 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum enhances their corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and acids.
Corrosion Resistance: 316 and 316L stainless steel sheets offer excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, including marine, chemical, and industrial settings. They are resistant to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion caused by exposure to corrosive agents.
Weldability: Both grades have good weldability, although 316L is preferred for applications that require welding. The lower carbon content in 316L (max 0.03%) compared to 316 (max 0.08%) minimizes the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, which can cause intergranular corrosion.
Heat Resistance: 316 and 316L stainless steel sheets exhibit good high-temperature strength and can withstand elevated temperatures without significant loss of mechanical properties. They are often used in applications involving continuous or intermittent high-temperature exposure.
