he story of pickleball is a uniquely American tale of invention, one that has evolved from a simple family activity into one of the world's fastest-growing sports.

The Birth: A Summer Day in 1965

The sport was born on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in the summer of 1965. Congressman Joel Pritchard and his friend Bill Bell returned to Pritchard's home to find their families bored with nothing to do. With an old badminton court but no proper equipment, they improvised. They lowered the net, fashioned paddles from plywood found in a shed, and began playing with a perforated plastic ball. The original rules were cobbled together from a blend of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, with one key innovation: the non-volley zone, or "the kitchen," was established to prevent smashes at the net and encourage longer rallies.

The name "pickleball" itself has a debated origin. The most common account, from Joan Pritchard, is that the game reminded her of the "pickle boat" in crew, which is filled with leftover rowers from other boats—much like their game was created from leftover elements of other sports. A less popular, but persistent, story suggests the family dog, Pickles, would chase the ball, thus naming the game after him.

Standardization and Early Growth (1970s - 1990s)

As the game's popularity spread beyond that single backyard, it required formalization. In 1972, a corporation was formed to protect the creation of the new sport. The first known tournament was held in 1976 in Tukwila, Washington, and by 1984, the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (U.S.A.P.A.) was formed to publish the first official rulebook.

During this period, pickleball was primarily played in backyards, community parks, and physical education classes, especially in the Pacific Northwest and retirement communities in Sun Belt states like Florida and Arizona. Its simple rules, low-impact nature, and social appeal made it a perfect fit for an active older demographic.
