The breathability principle of microporous bags is primarily applied in agriculture for post-harvest preservation and storage of agricultural products. By regulating the balance of gas and humidity, it delays crop spoilage and extends shelf life and storage period.
Post-harvest Preservation of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
1. Leafy Vegetable Preservation: Vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and romaine lettuce have high respiration rates. Microporous bags allow excess carbon dioxide to escape and oxygen to be added, preventing yellowing and rotting due to oxygen deficiency. Simultaneously, they allow moisture to escape, preventing condensation and keeping leaves fresh.
2. Berry Preservation: Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and grapes have thin skins and are easily perishable. The breathable pores reduce condensation inside the bag, lowering the risk of mold, while maintaining appropriate humidity to prevent fruit dehydration and shrinkage.
3. Root Vegetable and Cucurbit Storage: Vegetables such as carrots, celery, cucumbers, and tomatoes benefit from the breathable bags, balancing the ambient gas levels and delaying sprouting, softening, or rotting, extending storage time at room temperature or low temperatures.
4. Preservation of mushrooms: Shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms, etc. need to be well-ventilated and moisture-wicking to prevent mycelium from rotting. At the same time, excessive dryness should be prevented to avoid cracking of the caps and to improve the quality during distribution.
