Standard Introduction
ISO 4589-2 (JIS K 7201-2) specifies the test for the minimum volume fraction of oxygen (oxygen index OI) in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen with flame combustion of materials at room temperature. The oxygen index is a method for evaluating the flammability of organic materials. The higher the oxygen index, the higher the flame retardancy of the material.

 

Scope of application
I is applicable to measuring the flammability of materials such as rubber and plastic.

 

Test method
In the transparent combustion cylinder, a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen flows upward, vertically supporting the small sample within it. After igniting the upper end of the sample, observe its combustion behavior and compare the combustion duration or length of the sample with the specified combustion limit value. The minimum oxygen concentration was estimated by testing a series of samples by changing the oxygen concentration.

 

Basis for judgment
During the testing process, whether the sample is on fire, the burning time and the burning length are measured, and the minimum oxygen concentration required for continued combustion is determined as the oxygen index.
