"Bumping" is a hazardous phenomenon in evaporation where a liquid becomes superheated and then violently erupts, potentially causing loss of sample, contamination, or even glassware breakage. Rotary evaporation effectively prevents bumping through its core mechanical action. The constant rotation of the flask ensures the liquid is continuously agitated and spread into a thin film. This prevents the formation of large, unstable vapor bubbles that characterize bumping. Instead, vapor release is smooth and steady from the large surface area of the film. The combined use of reduced pressure also promotes smoother boiling. This inherent safety feature makes the rotovap a more reliable and controlled platform than simple heating under vacuum alone.
