Introduction about incubator
Marine biologists and coral researchers employ incubators to study the effects of environmental change on aquatic organisms.
A major application is ocean acidification and warming experiments. Coral fragments, sea urchin larvae, or phytoplankton are placed in aquaria or beakers inside precise temperature-controlled incubators. The water chemistry (pH/pCO2) is manipulated to simulate future ocean conditions. The incubator maintains a constant temperature (e.g., raising it by 1-3°C to model warming) while the water chemistry system controls acidity. This allows researchers to isolate and study the combined effects of heat stress and acidification on calcification rates, metabolism, and survival. For deep-sea organisms brought to the surface, refrigerated incubators set to near-freezing temperatures simulate their native high-pressure, cold environment as closely as possible for short-term studies.
Incubators also serve to culture marine bacteria, microalgae, or the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae extracted from corals. By providing a stable thermal backdrop, incubators enable the controlled perturbation of other variables, yielding critical insights into how climate change threatens marine ecosystems.
