An autoclave is a pressurized chamber designed for sterilization using saturated steam. The fundamental principle leverages the fact that moist heat is more efficient at killing microbes than dry heat. By increasing pressure, the boiling point of water is elevated, allowing steam to reach temperatures like 121°C. This heat denatures proteins within all microorganisms.
The operational sequence is critical: air must be removed to allow steam contact; the load must be held at temperature for sufficient time; and finally, pressure must be safely released. This device is indispensable in hospitals for instrument reprocessing, in dental clinics for infection control, and in research labs for maintaining aseptic conditions. It is also the method of choice for treating many types of regulated medical waste. Industrially, it is used for curing composites and growing crystals.
