An autoclave is a critical sterilization device that operates on the principle of moist heat under pressure. It functions as a sealed chamber where water is boiled to produce saturated steam. By containing this steam under pressure (e.g., 15-30 psi), its temperature is elevated to standardized levels like 121°C (250°F).
This environment is maintained for a specific duration to ensure microbial death through protein coagulation. The cycle is meticulously designed: air is first removed, steam then penetrates the load, and finally pressure is released and items are dried. Its utility spans healthcare (surgical tools), dentistry (instruments), and laboratories (glassware, media, biohazard waste). Industrial applications include rubber curing and crystal growth.
The autoclave is superior to many alternatives because saturated steam provides faster and more uniform heat distribution than dry air. This allows for effective sterilization at lower temperatures than dry heat requires.
