How the Decanter Centrifuge Works

1. Gypsum Slurry Feeding

Gypsum slurry enters the rotating bowl through a controlled feed pipe.

An agitated tank is normally used to prevent crystal settling and maintain a stable feed concentration.

2. Centrifugal Sedimentation

High-speed rotation separates gypsum crystals and suspended solids from the liquid phase.

The denser solids move outward and form a layer against the bowl wall, while clarified liquid remains closer to the center.

3. Continuous Solids Conveying

The internal screw conveyor rotates at a controlled differential speed.

It continuously transports the settled gypsum solids toward the conical end for further dewatering.

4. Clarified Liquid Discharge

The separated liquid leaves through the liquid outlet.

It can be returned to the process-water system or transferred to further clarification and wastewater treatment.

5. Thickened Gypsum Solids Discharge

Concentrated gypsum solids are discharged continuously.

The recovered gypsum can be sent to a filter press, vacuum belt filter, dryer, storage system, or further processing stage.

Key Selection Considerations

Gypsum Slurry Type

FGD gypsum, phosphogypsum, and chemical gypsum have different particle sizes, impurities, pH values, and corrosion conditions. The exact slurry source should be confirmed before selection.

Particle Size and Crystal Shape

Coarser gypsum crystals normally settle more easily. Fine crystals or irregular particles may require higher centrifugal force or flocculant dosing.

Slurry Concentration

Feed concentration affects throughput, torque, liquid clarity, and discharged-solids concentration. Stable feeding helps maintain consistent operation.

Corrosive Components

FGD and phosphogypsum slurry may contain chlorides, fluorides, acids, or other corrosive components. Liquid composition and temperature should be provided for material selection.

Abrasive Impurities

Silica, fly ash, sand, unreacted limestone, and mineral impurities may increase wear in the feed zone, scroll, and solids outlet.

Flocculant Compatibility

Flocculant may improve fine-particle capture and liquid clarity. Laboratory testing is recommended before confirming the dosing system.

Main Advantages

Continuous Gypsum Recovery

The centrifuge continuously separates gypsum crystals from the slurry, reducing product loss and avoiding frequent batch interruptions.

Stable Dewatering Performance

Bowl speed, differential speed, pond depth, and feed rate can be adjusted according to gypsum crystal size and slurry concentration.

Lower Final Moisture

The high centrifugal force removes free liquid from gypsum solids and improves the feed condition for further filtration or drying.

Process-Water Recovery

Clarified liquid can be recycled to washing, slurry preparation, or other production stages when it meets the process requirement.

Wear and Corrosion Protection

Optional wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components support reliable operation with silica, fly ash, chlorides, fluorides, and other impurities.

FAQ

Can a decanter centrifuge dewater FGD gypsum slurry?

Yes. It can continuously separate gypsum crystals from desulfurization slurry and recover clarified process liquid.

Can it process phosphogypsum?

Yes. Material selection should consider acidity, fluoride, chloride, and other corrosive components in the slurry.

Is wear protection necessary?

It depends on the impurity content. Wear protection is recommended when the slurry contains silica, fly ash, sand, or other abrasive solids.

Can clarified liquid be recycled?

Yes. Clarified liquid can often be returned to the process-water system or sent to further treatment.

Is flocculant dosing required?

Not always. It depends on gypsum particle size, fine-particle content, slurry concentration, and the required liquid clarity.
