Medium carbon steel plate in C45 or AISI 1045 quality fills the gap between low carbon structural steel and alloy engineering steel. With a carbon content between 0.42 and 0.50 percent, the grade can be hardened by quenching and tempering to reach tensile strengths of 600 to 800 megapascals, yet it remains inexpensive and easy to machine in the normalized condition. Machine builders and metal parts manufacturers select the plate for components that must carry load and resist wear after heat treatment, such as shafts, spindles, gears, pinions, cams, connecting rods, mold bases and machine tool parts, where the combination of price and predictable response to heat treatment matters more than alloy sophistication.

We supply C45 and 1045 plates in the as rolled condition for customers who will normalize or harden the parts themselves, and in normalized or quenched and tempered condition for those who machine directly to finished dimensions. Thick plate is rolled on heavy plate mills with good internal soundness, and we can provide ultrasonic testing for applications such as mold plates where internal defects cannot be tolerated. Because medium carbon steel has lower weldability than mild steel, our technical team advises on preheat and post weld heat treatment whenever the plate will be welded before heat treatment, helping fabricators avoid hardening cracks at the weld toe.

Medium carbon steel plate C45 and 1045 is machined into drive shafts, gear blanks, spindles, axles, pins and bushings, cams, crankshafts for small engines, hydraulic piston rods, mold bases and bolster plates for plastic injection molds, die sets, machine tool tables, jigs and fixtures, and general engineering components that receive induction hardening or nitriding. Steel service centers and machine shops stock the plate for jobbing work, while OEM factories order cut blanks to feed CNC lathes and machining centers. Plates are packed on steel skids or pallets with edge protectors and waterproof wrapping for export, and machined or ground surfaces are protected with rust preventive oil and paper.
