Product Overview

The Spirax Sarco SP7 Smart Valve Positioner is an electronically configurable instrument designed for precise control of pneumatic linear and rotary actuators that conform to the NAMUR standard. It receives a 4-20 mA DC control signal and converts it into a proportional pneumatic output pressure to drive the valve actuator, guaranteeing an exact proportionality between the valve stroke and the electrical input signal. The SP7-10 version includes a local communication interface (LCI) as standard, and an optional HART communication module enables communication via the 20 mA signal. HART 5 or HART 7 revisions are available to suit different asset management platforms. For fieldbus applications, the SP7-11 supports PROFIBUS PA and the SP7-12 supports FOUNDATION Fieldbus. In addition to the analog setpoint input, the positioner is equipped with a digital input for activating control system functions and a digital output for collective alarms and fault messages. The SP7-1* carries ATEX II 2 G Ex ib IIC T6, T4…T1 Gb and IECEx ratings for intrinsically safe applications in hazardous areas. Common Problems

1. Positioner does not respond to input signal – check the 4-20 mA loop for continuity, verify that the source can supply sufficient current, and confirm that the impedance does not exceed 485 ±15 Ω; inspect the air supply pressure and quality.

2. Valve does not stroke with setpoint change – verify pneumatic connections and supply pressure; confirm that the correct input signal is reaching the instrument and that automatic tuning has completed successfully.

3. Local display not functioning – check power supply and verify that the terminal connections are secure.

4. Automatic tuning fails to complete – check actuator stroke is within the range of 20 to 150 mm (linear) or 55° to 90° (rotary), verify supply pressure is between 1.4 and 6.0 bar, and ensure there is no mechanical binding.

5. Position feedback incorrect – verify the feedback linkage and recalibrate the positioner using the local interface or HART communicator.
