Product Overview

The Neles ND9000 is a microcontroller-based intelligent valve controller. It provides precise control of pneumatic actuators. The device operates on a 4-20mA loop or fieldbus power and continually compares the input signal with the actual valve position to adjust the actuator. It is compatible with virtually every control valve actuator across all industries.

Contactless position measurement eliminates mechanical wear in the feedback path. The same unit supports rotary and linear valves, as well as single-acting and double-acting actuators. Commissioning is simple using the local user interface (LUI) or remote DTM/EDD configuration. A 1-point calibration feature allows installation on in-service valves without process interruption.

The ND9000 carries SIL 2 certification from TÜV per IEC 61508. It offers comprehensive diagnostics: self-diagnostics, online diagnostics, performance diagnostics, and communication diagnostics. The device logs up to 8000 online alarms and maintenance reminders with 25-year data retention. Advanced diagnostic capabilities allow operators to track valve friction, spring force, and wear condition for predictive maintenance.

Common Problems

• Calibration Failed Due to Valve Position Out of Range: Check air supply pressure. For double-acting actuators, set pressure approximately 10 PSI below the expected minimum supply. For single-acting actuators, do not exceed the actuator rated pressure. Verify the H-Clip on the feedback lever is level, straight, and aligned with the valve feedback shaft.

• ERR / Travel Too Short: The positioner detected that the physical feedback shaft angle change did not reach the minimum electrical measurement threshold during Autotune. Check mounting and feedback linkage alignment.

• ERR / Control Deviation: The valve position deviates from the setpoint beyond the configured limit. Check for valve sticking, increased friction, or air supply issues.

• Hunting Detection Warning: Valve oscillation detected. Change the performance level to less aggressive to stabilize the valve. Verify the spool valve capacity is adequate for the actuator.

• Position Calibration Failed: Verify configuration parameters and controller mounting. Check that the controller shaft is correctly aligned.

• Temperature Sensor Failure: Temperature measurement failed. Accuracy of measurements is reduced. Replace the ND device at the next maintenance opportunity.

• Supply Pressure Out of Limits: Supply pressure exceeded specified operating conditions. Check the air supply regulator and compressor output.
