The Masoneilan SVI3 is a third-generation valve positioner that leverages HART 7 communication over a 4-20mA loop to control pneumatic actuators with high accuracy. Its non-contacting position sensor eliminates mechanical wear, and the unit operates reliably down to -55°C. The local interface includes a graphical display and hazardous-area-rated pushbuttons. Smart Cal enables one-button setup and calibration. The device stores up to one year of diagnostic data on-board and integrates with control systems via DTM and EDD. Application Industry
The SVI3 is deployed in power generation, refining, petrochemicals, midstream oil and gas, and upstream oil and gas. Typical uses include steam turbine generators, condensers, cooling towers, reactor and turbine buildings, heat recovery steam generators, balance of plant, distillation, hydroprocessing reforming, cracking, secondary blending, quenching and fractioning, charge gas compression, separation, pipeline integrity operations, dehydration, refrigeration, liquefaction, loading and shipping, regasification, and compression.
Common Problems
Smart Cal fails to complete: Check supply pressure is within 20-120 psi. Verify valve travel limits are within the rated range. Ensure the valve is not stuck or binding.
Position oscillation or cycling: Check whether stick slip is present. If position cycles are much greater than setpoint cycles, the positioner may be causing the cycling. Inspect for a handwheel blocking valve stroke, a broken stem, or disconnected position feedback components.
Communication failure with HART handheld: Verify loop resistance is adequate. Check terminal voltage meets compliance requirements (9Vdc @ 20mA, 11Vdc @ 4mA).
Low power error (LOW_POWER): Input current below 3.15 mA. Increase loop current to 4 mA for calibration and diagnostics.
TuneERR appears after autotune: Manual tuning may be required. Refer to the troubleshooting section in the instruction manual.
SelfCheckError or hardware failure: Remove power for two minutes and restart. Clear the alarm using ValVue or HART Host. If the failure persists, replace the electronics module.
Replacement Models
The Masoneilan SVI3 is the direct replacement for the SVI II AP and SVI1000. It features stainless steel mounting brackets for any valve/actuator combination and is fully backwards compatible with SVI II AP and SVI1000 mounting brackets. For SVI II AP users, the upgrade is relatively simple — existing mounting can be used, and only the air/tubing connection may need adjustment. For cross-vendor alternatives, verify actuator mounting, travel range, and communication protocol before ordering.
