(S)-(+)-mandelic acid, also known as L-mandelic acid or mandelic acid, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H8O3, a molecular weight of 152.15, and CAS number 17199-29-0. It is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 131-134℃ and a water solubility of up to 100 g/L (25℃).
This compound is mainly used for the resolution of chiral substances and the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, and is applied as a biochemical reagent in life science research. When storing, the powder form should be kept in a sealed container at -20℃, and the solution form should be stored at -80℃, avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Gentle Exfoliation and Whitening: Mandelic acid's molecular structure has high skin affinity, allowing it to penetrate the stratum corneum and loosen the connections between keratinocytes, promoting the shedding of dead skin cells. It can inhibit tyrosinase activity, reduce melanin production, and lighten existing pigmentation by accelerating exfoliation.
Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Effects: Mandelic acid has a significant inhibitory effect on common skin pathogens such as Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. Its acidic environment can improve the microecology of hair follicles. It can reduce inflammatory responses and alleviate redness and irritation caused by acne.
Antioxidant and Skin Moisturizing: Its benzene ring structure can capture free radicals, reducing oxidative stress damage to the skin barrier. Mandelic acid can promote the synthesis of natural moisturizing factors in the skin and enhance the stratum corneum's moisture retention capacity.
Skincare and Resurfacing Products: Used as an active ingredient in anti-acne cleansers, serums, and masks for gentle conditioning of oily and acne-prone skin. In chemical resurfacing agents, it is used at low concentrations (5%-10%) to improve uneven skin tone, fine lines, and mild acne scars, with lower irritation than fruit acids.
Pharmaceuticals and Oral Care: Used in medications treating urinary tract infections (such as urotropine mandelate), it releases formaldehyde in acidic urine to exert its antibacterial effect. Added to mouthwashes or toothpaste to help control plaque and bad breath.
