11-W-4 light duty welded steel grating with a serrated surface is the same close-mesh panel — bearing bars at 11/16 in. (17.5 mm) on centre, cross bars at 4 in. (100 mm) on centre — with teeth cut into the top edge of every bearing bar.
The mesh decides what falls through; the surface decides whether the person on top keeps their feet. Choose them separately.

When Serrated Is the Right Call
Wet or oily decks. The teeth break the fluid film that causes hydroplaning under a smooth sole.
Slopes and stairs. Any incline above about 1:20 deserves a serrated surface or an abrasive nosing.
Cold climates. Frost and ice make plain bar grating unpredictable; serrated gives mechanical key.
Public-access walkways. 11/16 in. openings plus teeth cover both drop-through and slip risk in one panel.
When Plain Is Better — and Cheaper
Plain 11-W-4 costs roughly 8-15% less and is easier to sweep and wash down. It is also quieter under trolleys and kinder to anyone who has to kneel on the deck. Serration is a safety upgrade, not a default — over-specifying it is money spent and comfort lost.
Does Serration Reduce Strength?
Slightly. Cutting teeth removes a small amount of section from the top of the bearing bar. The practical rule: add about 1/4 in. (6 mm) to the bearing bar depth when you move from plain to serrated, to hold the same load capacity at the same span. In practice most buyers keep the 1 in. or 1-1/4 in. bar and simply accept the small margin, because 11-W-4 already puts ~70% more bearing bars per foot under the load than 19-W-4.
Always confirm the final bar size against the ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 load table for your span, and remember that 11-W-4 is a light duty pedestrian panel — never a forklift deck.
Care, Cleaning and Coating
Galvanizing first. Panels are fabricated, then hot-dip galvanized as a whole unit per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 (average ≥ 85 µm), so the teeth, welds and cut edges are all coated.
Site cuts. Grind and cold-galvanize any cut edge; an uncoated cut is where rust starts.
Cleaning. Serrations hold dirt better than a flat bar — a stiff broom across the bars (not along them) is the quick method. Pressure washing works; avoid steam-cleaning at close range on new zinc.
Inspection. Check teeth in high-traffic lanes annually. If they polish smooth in a wheeled route, change that lane to plain or heavy duty grating.

FAQ
Can I get serrated on only part of a panel?
Yes. Many projects serrate the walking lane or the stair tread nose and leave the rest plain to save cost.
Is the serration applied or cut?
Cut or pressed into the bar before welding. It cannot peel off like anti-slip tape or grit coating.
How much extra does it cost?
