Stainless steel grating is a bar grating fabricated from 304, 304L, 316, or 316L stainless bearing bars and cross rods, built for corrosive, sanitary, or marine environments where carbon steel would rust. Its key difference from galvanized grating is simple: the corrosion resistance is in the material itself, not in a coating that can wear, chip, or be cut away. It is made welded or press-locked, plain or serrated, and it keeps a clean, easy-to-wash surface for decades. GNEE STEEL produces stainless panels to ASTM A240, ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531-17, BS 4592, and YB/T 4001.1, with a mill test certificate on every heat.
The grade is the single most important line on a stainless grating specification, because it decides where the panel survives.

Choose 304 unless the exposure demands more. Choose 316 for any chloride or seawater contact. Choose 316L specifically when the panel is welded and will sit in seawater or an aggressive chemical — the lower carbon keeps the corrosion resistance intact at every weld.
Stainless is stiffer and stronger than carbon steel at the same bar size, so published carbon-steel load tables are corrected with a factor rather than reissued. Apply these to the carbon-steel safe load and deflection:

In short: a 304 or 316 panel carries about 11% more load than the carbon-steel table shows, while a 304L or 316L panel carries about 8% less because its lower carbon reduces the allowable stress. State the grade before you read a load figure.

For food, pharmaceutical, and cleanroom floors, finish matters as much as grade. Mill finish is acceptable for dry areas. Pickled and passivated surfaces remove free iron and restore the passive layer. Electro-polished surfaces reach a low Ra for washdown and inspection. All three are available on the same bar geometry as carbon steel.
Stainless panels can be serrated on the bearing bars for wet, oily, or inclined food-plant and deck surfaces. The teeth are cut into the bar top before welding, so they are part of the steel and survive washdown without peeling. Where the floor stays dry and hygiene inspection is strict, a plain electro-polished surface is preferred because it is easier to clean. Choose serration for grip, plain for cleanability — both are weld-compatible and certificate-backed.
If the panel sees only moisture, mild chemicals, or daily washdown with no salt, 304 is the economical default. The moment chloride enters the picture — seawater, coastal air, de-icing salt, or process chlorides — step up to 316, and to 316L if the panel is welded. Specifying 304 in a marine environment is the most common and most expensive mistake we are asked to correct.
Yes. Use the same geometry — bearing bar size, spacing, panel width and length, load class. Stainless only adds the grade choice, which is driven by the environment.
Specify 316 or 316L. The molybdenum in 316 resists chloride pitting that would attack 304. Use 316L when the panel is welded.
