Heavy duty steel grating is a welded or press-locked bar grating built with deep, thick bearing bars so it can carry vehicle wheels, forklifts, and concentrated machinery loads that a standard 19-W-4 panel cannot. The line between standard and heavy duty is not a separate product family — it is a bar-size decision. A panel becomes "heavy duty" when the bearing bars are deep enough and thick enough to keep deflection within limits under hard-wheel traffic. GNEE STEEL supplies heavy duty panels to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531-17, EN ISO 14122, and YB/T 4001.1, and we quote the bar size against your actual span and wheel load rather than a generic mesh name.
This is the floor you specify when the surface sees more than foot traffic:
If the traffic includes hard wheels, do not reach for a light-duty mesh. Specify the load case first and let the bar size follow.

| Item | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Bearing bar depth | 40 mm to 100 mm+ |
| Bearing bar thickness | 5 mm (light HD) to 10 mm (project HD) |
| Bearing bar pitch | 30 / 40 / 50 mm (1-3/16", 1-1/2", 2" imperial) |
| Cross bar pitch | 50 / 100 mm (2" / 4") |
| Bearing bar type | Plain, serrated, or I-bar |
| Material | ASTM A36, A572 Gr50, Q235B, Q355B (S355) |
| Panel size | Up to 1,500 × 6,000 mm, cut and banded to drawings |
| Surface | Untreated, hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461), painted |
H-20 is the AASHTO standard design vehicle: a 20-ton (36,000 lb) truck whose rear axle places roughly 16,000 lb (about 7,250 kg) on each of its two rear wheels. Grating "H-20 rated" must carry that wheel load across the clear span without exceeding the deflection limit. The rating lives in the bar size and span, not in the mesh name. A panel called 19-W-4 in a catalogue is not H-20 capable until the bearing bars are sized for it.
The figures below are indicative planning values, not a load table. Confirm against a certified load table for your exact span, wheel load, and deflection limit before ordering.
| Bearing Bar (Depth × Thickness) | Typical Use Under Vehicle Traffic |
|---|---|
| 40 × 5 mm | Short, closely supported openings after verification |
| 50 × 5 / 50 × 6 mm | Common heavy-industrial covers, short-span vehicle lanes |
| 60 × 6 / 60 × 8 mm | More stiffness or load reserve; heavier, may need lifting gear |
| 75 × 8 mm | Demanding spans, roadway covers, special heavy layouts |
| 100 × 10 mm and larger | Project-specific traffic or industrial loading, made to order |
For budgeting only, the bearing-bar weight contribution is:
7.85 × bar depth (mm) × bar thickness (mm) ÷ bar pitch (mm) = kg/m²Example: 60 × 6 mm bars at 30 mm pitch ≈ 94 kg/m² before cross bars, banding, and zinc. Add roughly 5% for galvanizing and plan crane or forklift handling on the galvanized weight.
Heavy duty floors are judged on serviceability as much as strength. A deflection limit of L/200 is the usual serviceability target; L/400 is specified for stiffer vehicular decks. Always run the bearing bars across the span, perpendicular to the supports. Band the cut edges, and fix with a minimum of four saddle clips per panel so dynamic wheel loads cannot loosen the floor.
Standard grating (for example 19-W-4) is sized for pedestrians and light trolleys. Heavy duty grating uses deeper, thicker bearing bars — often 50 mm deep and up — so it carries forklift and vehicle wheel loads within the same span.
Yes. All cutting, notching, and banding are completed before galvanizing so the coating covers every fabricated edge, per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461.
No. H-20 is a defined truck whose rear wheels each load about 16,000 lb. The panel must carry that wheel load across its clear span at the allowed deflection — the rating is a span-and-bar-size result, not a point figure.
Welded is the default for heavy wheel loads because the forged joint is continuous. Press-locked can be used where a flush top or closer mesh is wanted, but the bar size must still be verified against the load case.
Span between supports, the heaviest wheel or axle load, the deflection limit your engineer requires, panel dimensions, and the surface finish. Send a drawing and we return a bar-size proposal and a quote.
Tell GNEE STEEL the span, the wheel or axle load, and the finish, and we return a sized proposal with a load review, usually within two working days.
