High Light Hot-DIP Galvanized Steel Grating ,Simple Installation Steel Grating ,Durable Galvanized Bar Grating

Hot-dip galvanized steel grating is welded bar grating that is dipped as a finished panel in molten zinc at about 450 °C, so bearing bars, cross bars, weld nodes and cut edges all carry a metallurgically bonded zinc-iron coating. The zinc protects in two ways: it seals the steel off, and it sacrifices itself to any scratch or chip that reaches the surface.

GNEE STEEL galvanizes after welding, cutting and banding — never before. That sequence is the whole point of the finish, and it is what separates a galvanized panel from one made out of pre-galvanized bar.

Why the Dip Comes After Fabrication

ASTM A123 covers iron and steel articles dipped after they are made; ASTM A653 covers sheet and coil coated on a continuous line, before anyone cuts it. The two are not interchangeable. A panel built from pre-galvanized bar has bare steel at every cut end, drilled hole and weld node, and no amount of coil coating weight will change that.

In practice, all cutting, notching, banding and tread fabrication must be finished before the panel goes to the kettle. Anything cut on site afterwards needs repair, and a repair is never as good as the original coating.

What the Standards Require
Steel thickness ASTM A123 min. average coating EN ISO 1461 / GB/T 13912
Under 1.6 mm 45 µm local 45 µm / mean 55 µm
1.6 to 3.2 mm 65 µm local 45 µm / mean 55 µm
3.2 to 4.8 mm 75 µm local 55 µm / mean 70 µm
4.8 to 6.4 mm 75 µm local 55 µm / mean 70 µm
6.4 mm and over 100 µm local 70 µm / mean 85 µm

Grating bars are usually 3 mm to 5 mm thick, so the applicable grade is 75 µm average under A123, or 55 µm local / 70 µm mean under ISO 1461 and GB/T 13912. Two clauses matter before you accept a batch: A123 allows any single specimen one grade below the table value, and sampling on 4 to 500 pieces is three pieces. Name the test method in the order — magnetic gauge to ASTM E376 or gravimetric to ASTM A90.

Thicker is not automatically better. Above roughly 120 µm the alloy layers grow coarse and brittle and the coating can flake in handling, which costs more protection than it adds.

Steel Chemistry

Coating quality is decided at the steel mill as much as at the kettle. Steel with silicon in the Sandelin range, roughly 0.04% to 0.14%, or phosphorus above about 0.04%, reacts far too fast with the zinc bath. The result is a thick, brittle, dull grey coating that chips at the edges and looks bad. It is not a bath problem and it cannot be polished away.

The control is simple: buy bar with a mill certificate and read the silicon and phosphorus before it reaches the welder. Mill scale and weld slag must also go before pickling, since hydrochloric acid will not touch either and any patch left behind becomes an uncoated spot.

Design Rules Before the Dip
  • Vent and drain every closed section to ASTM A385. A fully sealed banded pocket traps pickle acid and then boils in the zinc bath, which is a real safety hazard, not a cosmetic one.
  • Weld band bars with staggered gaps rather than a continuous seal, so zinc flows in and out freely.
  • Expect some distortion. A long, thin panel at bath temperature can bow; avoid designs that weld heavy sections to light ones, since they heat and cool at different rates.
  • Do not machine threads after galvanizing: nuts are tapped oversize and threads are coated.
Storage, Field Repair and Service Life

Wet storage stain is the most common complaint on arrival, and it is a storage fault: stack new panels tight and wrap them damp, and the zinc converts to bulky white hydroxide within days. Keep panels dry, on spacers, under cover with air movement. Light white staining is cosmetic; heavy attack consumes coating.

Field cuts and weld repairs are handled to ASTM A780: sprayed zinc, zinc solder, or zinc-rich paint, with paint repairs usually specified at 75 to 100 µm dry film. Bare spots are limited to about 25 mm in the larger dimension and 0.5% of the accessible area in total.

For service life, published estimates put 65 µm at roughly 20 to 30 years to first maintenance in a general industrial atmosphere and 85 µm at 30 to 40 years; marine exposure is shorter. Those are planning figures — actual life follows the ISO 9223 corrosivity category, wetting time and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which standard should my drawing name?

ASTM A123 for North America, EN ISO 1461 internationally, GB/T 13912 for China, AS/NZS 4680 for Australia and New Zealand. Name one, and name the test method.

2. How much does galvanizing add to the weight?

Plan on roughly 5% over the black weight, and quote freight and lifting on the galvanized figure.

3. Will the zinc bridge the openings?

On standard grating pitches, no. Very tight close-mesh patterns can collect zinc in the slot, and we flag those before production.

4. What documents ship with the order?

Mill certificate to EN 10204 3.1, coating thickness measurements for the batch, and a factory inspection report. Third-party inspection is arranged on request.
