Serrated steel grating is welded bar grating with notches cut into the top edge of every bearing bar before welding, giving a walking surface that grips when it is wet, oily or iced. It is the specification of choice wherever a slip would put someone at risk: process platforms, wash-down areas, offshore walkways, drainage channels and external stair treads.
The serration is part of the bar, not an added strip. GNEE STEEL cuts the notch pattern on the same press-welding lines used for smooth grating, so serrated panels come in the full range of bearing bar sizes, pitches, materials and finishes — Q235B, ASTM A36 or S275JR carbon steel, stainless 304 and 316, hot-dip galvanized, powder coated or PVC.
The teeth are cut or pressed into the top edge of the bearing bar before it enters the welder. The requirement written into YB/T 4001.1 is specific: not fewer than seven teeth in any 100 mm of bar length, a tooth depth of at least 1.5 mm, and no deeper than 2.5 mm. Profiles are normally trapezoidal or semicircular, and finer or coarser patterns are made to order.
That geometry matters for two reasons. The notches bite through the thin film of water, oil or grease that defeats a smooth bar, and the tooth depth is shallow enough that the bar keeps most of its section. Serration is normally single sided — on the walking edge. Double-sided bar is produced for components that are handled or reversed.
A smooth galvanized bar is a reasonable surface in a dry plant, and a poor one the moment liquid or product gets onto it. The failure mode is predictable: a thin film fills the contact between sole and steel, and friction collapses. Roughening the surface is the only fix that does not depend on housekeeping, and that is what the serration does.
The counterweight is maintenance. A notch packed with mud, scale, grease or dried product behaves like a smooth surface, so serrated grating in dirty service needs washing down on a schedule. Where traffic also includes wheeled trolleys, smooth grating rolls better; serrated grating is rougher on soles and on anything dragged across it.
Serration removes metal from the top of the bar, so a serrated panel of the same nominal size carries slightly less than a smooth one. The correction used across the industry is simple: step the bar up one depth. Doing so adds weight and cost, and that is the real price of the grip — the serrating operation itself is a small adder.
| Bearing bar | Smooth duty | Serrated duty |
|---|---|---|
| 25 × 5 mm | Light pedestrian, short spans | Use 32 × 5 mm instead |
| 32 × 5 mm | Standard walkways, platforms | Use 40 × 5 mm instead |
| 40 × 5 mm | General industrial flooring | Use 45 – 50 × 5 mm, confirm by span |
Never take a serrated capacity from a smooth-bar load table. Ask for the serrated table for the exact configuration, or hand us the span and load and let us calculate it.
Slip performance is measured, not asserted. The test methods buyers ask for most often:
| Method | What it measures | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| DIN 51130 ramp test | Oil-wetted inclined ramp, rated R9 to R13 | European industrial flooring specs |
| AS/NZS 4586 pendulum | Pendulum slip value on wet surface | Australia, New Zealand, UK specs |
| ASTM F1679 tribometer | Coefficient of friction, variable incidence | North American walking-surface specs |
Local rules usually drive the choice: OSHA walking-working surface rules require slip-resistant surfaces, while BS 4592 and AS 1657 set grating requirements in the UK and Australia. Whatever applies, ask for the slip-test report on the configuration you are buying, not a generic certificate.
Slightly, at the same nominal bar size, because the notches cut into the section. Specify the next deeper bar and the capacity comes back.
No — serration and finish are independent choices. In practice wet and outdoor areas get both, and galvanizing after fabrication keeps the notches coated.
The notches are machined into solid bar. They dull under heavy traffic over time but do not disappear; the bigger risk is a notch packed with dirt, which is why wash-down matters.
Yes. Serrated treads with a nosing and welded end plates are the standard answer for external and wet-area stairs.
