10/16 kN ISO 7364 Electric Accommodation Ladder Winch | Single Drum with Manual Backup
Product Overview
The 10 kN and 16 kN electric accommodation ladder winch is a dedicated shipboard deck machine for hoisting, lowering, holding, and stowing a marine accommodation ladder. The winch uses an electric motor for normal powered operation and includes manual drive for emergency operation when electrical power is unavailable. A single drum stores the suspension wire rope, while the reduction gearing and holding device control ladder movement and secure the drum when the drive is stopped.
The product is designed and tested to the accommodation-ladder-winch requirements of ISO 7364:2016. For Chinese projects, the current equivalent national standard is GB/T 1392-2021, which identically adopts ISO 7364:2016. The obsolete GB/T 1392-1985 and the incorrect “ISO 7363” reference should not be used on a current product page. This winch is for handling the accommodation ladder itself; it is not a mechanical pilot hoist and should not be described as a winch for hoisting a pilot ladder.
Quick Specifications
• Standard: ISO 7364:2016 → current published international standard for design and testing of accommodation ladder winches; GB/T 1392-2021 is the current identical Chinese adoption.
• Nominal size / drum load: 10 kN or 16 kN → the nominal size corresponds to the ISO-defined drum load, not a generic SWL.
• Holding load: 30 kN or 48 kN → ISO 7364 defines holding load as at least three times the drum load.
• Drive: electric motor with manual backup → powered winches are required to permit manual hoisting and lowering when power is unavailable.
• Hoisting speed: 8.09 / 10 m/min for 10 kN; 9.85 / 11.64 m/min for 16 kN → source values appear to correspond to 50 / 60 Hz operating points and should be confirmed against the motor and gearbox data.
• Drum arrangement: single drum, three winding layers in the supplied model data → drum capacity 37 m for 10 kN and 50 m for 16 kN.
• Safety functions: automatic holding device, local emergency stop, power-loss holding, and crank-handle protection → these are core ISO 7364 design requirements.
• Control: project-specific local and/or remote operation → ISO 7364 requires a local emergency stop; remote control is an additional project option and does not replace the local emergency-stop function.
What the Winch Does
During deployment, the operator releases the stowage arrangement and lowers the accommodation ladder under controlled drum rotation. During recovery, the electric drive hoists the ladder to the required stowage position. When the drive is stopped or electrical power is lost, the holding device must prevent unintended drum rotation. Manual drive provides an emergency method for hoisting or lowering the accommodation ladder without relying on the electric motor.
Where the accommodation ladder is used as part of an approved pilot-transfer combination arrangement, this winch handles the accommodation-ladder component only. The pilot ladder remains a separate item; mechanical pilot hoists are prohibited under SOLAS pilot-transfer requirements. From 1 January 2028, the revised IMO pilot-transfer performance standards also require protection against inadvertent operation of the accommodation-ladder hoisting and lowering mechanism during personnel transfer.
ISO 7364 Load Definitions & Rope Selection
• Drum Load: maximum rope tension at the drum exit when hoisting an unloaded accommodation ladder at nominal speed with the rope wound in a single layer, or when placing the ladder in its stowage position.
• Holding Load: maximum static rope tension at the drum exit in a single layer; ISO 7364 requires it to be at least three times the drum load.
• Holding Device Capacity: the drum-holding device is required to hold 1.5 times the holding load and to operate automatically when the drive is shut off or power fails.
• Rope Design Basis: ISO 7364 bases drum design on 6 × 37 galvanized steel wire rope with fibre core, 1,770 N/mm² tensile grade in accordance with ISO 2408. Other rope types may be used in service when the approved design and rope strength requirements are satisfied.
• Actual Selected Rope Diameter: ISO 7364 Table 1 gives 13 mm for a 10 kN single-drum winch and 14 mm for a 16 kN single-drum winch; 15 mm is shown in brackets as a value included in national standard specifications.
• Rope Strength Requirement: the breaking load of the actual selected steel wire rope shall be not less than five times the actual holding load of the accommodation ladder winch; national authorities may require a higher factor.
• Drum Geometry & Capacity: drum diameter is not less than 14 times the applicable Table 1 rope diameter; the flange projects at least 1.5 rope diameters beyond the outermost layer. Effective working rope length is wound in not more than three layers, while the full rope is wound in not more than five layers.
Main Technical Parameters
The values below combine the customer-supplied model data with corrected ISO 7364:2016 terminology. For wire-rope diameter, the ISO Table 1 values for a single-drum winch are used: 13 mm for nominal size 10 and 14 mm for nominal size 16, with 15 mm shown in brackets as a national-standard value.

Electric Drive, Holding Device & Manual Operation
• Electric motor and gearbox → provide normal powered hoisting and lowering; the motor rating is matched to the drum load, speed, transmission ratio, duty, ship voltage, and frequency.
• Automatic holding device → must retain the drum when the drive is shut down or ship power is lost and must withstand the required static holding condition.
• Manual drive → required on powered winches so the accommodation ladder can still be hoisted or lowered without electrical power.
• Crank Safety: the manual-drive arrangement must protect the operator from a revolving crank handle; the detailed interlock or disengagement method should follow the approved winch design.
• Local emergency stop → required by ISO 7364 and should stop the winch immediately and reliably during ladder movement.
• Remote Control: remote operation may be provided as a project option, but ISO 7364 specifically requires a local emergency stop. Remote control does not replace that local safety function.
Drum, Wire Rope & Ladder Interface
• Confirm the accommodation-ladder dead weight, number of suspension ropes, reeving arrangement, pulley / sheave diameter, ladder travel, stowage position, and required rope length before fixing drum capacity.
• For a single-drum winch, ISO 7364 Table 1 gives an actual selected wire-rope diameter of 13 mm for nominal size 10 and 14 mm for nominal size 16; 15 mm appears in brackets as a national-standard value. The actual rope breaking load must still be at least five times the actual holding load.
• The rope fleet angle and lead from drum to sheave should be arranged to promote even winding and avoid rubbing, cross-winding, or local rope damage.
• The rope end anchoring, retained turns, drum flange clearance, working rope length, and winding layers must follow the approved winch design. ISO 7364 limits the effective working length to not more than three layers and the full rope to not more than five layers.
• Galvanized steel wire rope, sheaves, pins, ladder suspension points, and structural attachments should be inspected as one complete accommodation-ladder system rather than as isolated components.
Factory Acceptance & Onboard Testing
• No-load factory test → ISO 7364 requires 10 minutes continuous running, 5 minutes in each direction, with bearing temperature checked.
• Drum-load factory test → operate through lowering and hoisting cycles under drum load, including hauling in with at least one-third of the drum rope capacity paid out.
• Drive overload check → the winch drive is required to withstand 1.5 times the drum load for 2 minutes during hoisting without failure.
• Emergency-stop check → operate the emergency stop while the ladder is being hoisted or lowered and confirm immediate, reliable stopping.
• Static Holding Test → apply 1.5 times the holding load with the rope in a single layer and confirm the holding device prevents drum rotation. For a one-rope winch, ISO Table 1 gives 18 mm test rope for nominal size 10 and 22 mm test rope for nominal size 16 for this load-test procedure.
• Onboard test → test the winch as part of the complete accommodation-ladder installation, including full-height hoisting / lowering and the static ladder-unit load required by the applicable ladder standard.
• Inspection records → factory and onboard test results, rope certificates, electrical data, and class witness records should be retained according to the agreed inspection and certification scope.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between drum load and holding load?
A1: Drum load is the ISO-defined maximum rope tension during normal hoisting at nominal speed or when placing the ladder in its stowage position. Holding load is the maximum static rope tension at the drum exit and must be at least three times the drum load. For the 10 kN and 16 kN nominal sizes, the corresponding holding loads are 30 kN and 48 kN.
Q2: What wire-rope diameter does ISO 7364 specify for the 10 kN and 16 kN single-drum winches?
A2: ISO 7364 Table 1 gives 13 mm as the actual selected steel wire rope diameter for a 10 kN single-drum winch and 14 mm for a 16 kN single-drum winch; 15 mm is shown in brackets as a value included in national standard specifications. The separate 18 mm and 22 mm values in Table 1 are for the winch load-test procedure, not the normal service-rope diameter. In every case, the actual selected rope must meet the required breaking-load safety factor relative to the actual holding load.
Q3: Can this winch be used as a pilot ladder hoist?
A3: No. ISO 7364 covers accommodation ladder winches. Where an accommodation ladder forms part of a pilot-transfer combination arrangement, this winch may handle the accommodation-ladder component, but the pilot ladder itself is separate and mechanical pilot hoists are prohibited by SOLAS pilot-transfer requirements.
