3T × 5m Electric Fixed-Boom Marine Deck Crane | Pedestal Slewing Crane

Product Overview

The 3T × 5m electric fixed-boom marine deck crane is a pedestal-mounted slewing crane designed for shipboard handling of provisions, spare parts, maintenance equipment, packaged stores, waste containers, and other approved deck-service loads. The supplied configuration is based on a 3-tonne rated lifting capacity at a 5 m working radius, with electric hoisting and electric slewing drives.

Unlike a luffing or telescopic crane, this model uses a fixed box-girder boom, so the principal outreach is set by the approved crane geometry rather than adjusted during operation. The crane structure consists of a pedestal / tower column, slewing bearing, fixed boom, hoisting machinery, slewing reducer, electrical control system, wire-rope reeving and hook arrangement. Final supply must be matched to the vessel's class, lifting duty, hook height, slewing sector, heel and trim condition, wind environment, deck foundation and electrical system.

Key Operating Data

• Rated capacity: 3 t at 5 m working radius → the webpage basis is a 3T × 5m shipboard lifting duty; final SWL marking and load chart follow the approved design.

• Fixed boom: 5 m nominal working radius → no luffing or telescoping function is included in the supplied product description.

• Hoisting speed: 6 m/min → suited to controlled deck-service lifts where positioning accuracy is more important than high-cycle cargo handling speed.

• Slewing speed: 0.8 rpm → provides powered horizontal positioning around the pedestal; total slewing angle and any end stops remain to be confirmed.

• Drive power: 11 kW hoisting motor + 2.2 kW slewing motor → final motor selection must match starting duty, ambient temperature, ship supply and class requirements.

• Electrical protection: IP56, Class F insulation → enclosure, anti-condensation heating and low-temperature component suitability should be confirmed for the vessel environment.

• Control supply: 24 V safety control voltage → local pendant / station and remote-control arrangement are project-specific.

• Main supply: AC 380 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz → alternative shipboard voltage and frequency can be engineered when confirmed at inquiry stage.

Mechanical Arrangement

• Pedestal / tower column: transfers vertical load, horizontal force and overturning moment from the crane into the ship foundation.

• Slewing bearing and reducer: support the rotating upper structure and provide powered slewing; bearing selection and fastening require the approved design loads.

• Fixed steel box-girder boom: provides a rigid 5 m outreach with no operating luffing motion; boom section, weld details and local reinforcement are subject to structural approval.

• Hoisting mechanism: marine electric motor, reduction gearbox and brake drive the wire-rope system; drum, rope, sheaves and hook block must be matched to the required lift height and reeving.

• Hoisting brake: the supplied description includes a motor brake; brake rating, fail-safe action, holding capacity and manual release arrangement should be confirmed in the technical specification.

• Maintenance access: lubrication points, gearbox access, slewing-bearing service points and electrical components should remain reachable after the crane is installed on the vessel.

Electrical, Control & Safety Functions

• Local and remote operation can be arranged according to the vessel control philosophy; exact station locations, cable length and control method must be defined before production.

• IP56 protection is specified for the electrical equipment basis. Final enclosure rating must be maintained at cable glands, junction boxes, pendant stations and external connectors.

• For the stated -40 °C to +50 °C ambient range, low-temperature grease, cables, seals, brakes, motor heaters and electrical components require separate confirmation rather than assuming the complete crane is automatically suitable.

• Safety functions to be confirmed include emergency stop, upper / lower hook limits, overload protection or load limiting, brake monitoring where required, phase protection and slewing end limitation when the rotation is not continuous.

• Where remote operation is supplied, the operator must retain a clear view or an approved communication / monitoring arrangement for the lifting area.

• Final cable routing, earthing, short-circuit protection and shipboard power interface should follow the vessel electrical specification and classification requirements.

Ship Integration & Foundation

• The crane pedestal cannot be selected by diameter alone. The shipyard requires foundation loads including vertical force, horizontal force, torsional load and overturning moment for the governing operating and stowed conditions.

• Deck plating, stool / pedestal connection, brackets, girders and local stiffeners must be checked by the vessel designer against the approved crane reactions.

• Welded or bolted connection details, slewing-bearing fasteners and foundation tolerances should be included on the installation drawing before fabrication.

• Crane position should provide the required 5 m service envelope without hook, boom or suspended-load interference with railings, hatch covers, masts, accommodation structures or other deck equipment.

• Ship heel, trim, vessel acceleration, wind load and load off-lead can change crane structural demand. These design conditions must be stated rather than treating a static 3 t × 5 m rating as the complete engineering basis.

• A stowed / sea-fastened position, boom support or parking device should be defined for navigation when required by the approved arrangement.

Marine Service & Coating

• Surface preparation should be specified as Sa 2½ in accordance with the project coating specification; the original wording 'S2.5' has been corrected.

• The supplied coating basis is three layers of epoxy paint. Primer type, intermediate coat, finish coat, colour and total dry-film thickness should be confirmed for the actual marine exposure category.

• Machined surfaces, slewing bearing seats, wire rope, brakes, electrical interfaces and nameplates require appropriate masking or protection during blasting and painting.

• Outdoor deck service requires drainage, corrosion protection at water traps, sealed electrical entries and suitable lubrication at exposed rotating components.

• Touch-up coating after shipyard welding and final installation should follow the vessel paint system so that foundation welds and damaged coating areas receive equivalent protection.

Class, SOLAS & Inspection Basis

For applicable SOLAS ships, onboard lifting appliances are now subject to SOLAS Regulation II-1/3-13, in force from 1 January 2026, together with the supporting IMO Guidelines for lifting appliances (MSC.1/Circ.1663). New permanently installed cranes should therefore be ordered with the design approval, product certification, load testing, marking, manuals and inspection scope required by the vessel's flag Administration and recognized classification society.

• Design basis: vessel class rules or another standard accepted by the Administration; DNV-ST-0377 / DNV-ST-0378 and the LR Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment are examples of current shipboard crane frameworks.

• Crane classification / duty should reflect expected cycles and load spectrum rather than SWL alone; ISO 4301-1 provides a general crane-classification method.

• Final testing should include functional checks, brake operation, limit / safety functions, electrical tests and load testing according to the approved class procedure.

• Periodic thorough examination, maintenance and load-test intervals are controlled by SOLAS, flag and class requirements after the crane enters service.

• The crane should be permanently marked with SWL and the approved operating radius information according to the applicable certification scheme.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm crane duty: stores / provision handling, spare parts, maintenance loads or another approved shipboard lifting purpose; identify whether lifts are inboard, over-side or both.

Step 2: Confirm SWL 3 t at 5 m radius, required hook height, lifting height below deck level if any, wire-rope length, slewing angle, stowed position and expected operating cycles.

Step 3: Provide vessel type, installation position, class society, flag requirement, heel / trim condition, wind condition, service temperature and whether the lift is intended for harbor, sheltered-water or sea-going operation.

Step 4: Confirm electrical supply, local / remote control, emergency stop, overload / limit devices, motor-space heaters, cable specification and any hazardous-area requirement.

Step 5: Provide deck / foundation drawing and request foundation reactions for ship structural design; confirm pedestal interface, bolt / weld arrangement and installation tolerances.

Step 6: Confirm coating system, colour, SWL marking, material traceability, class certificate, factory acceptance test, load test, quantity, destination and required delivery time.

FAQ

Q1: Is the full 3 t SWL available at the complete 5 m working radius?

A1: The supplied model designation and technical data are based on 3 t at 5 m. Because this is a fixed-boom crane, 5 m is treated as the principal approved outreach for this page. The final SWL marking and any operating limitations must still be confirmed on the class-approved general arrangement and load data.

Q2: What information is required for class approval and shipyard foundation design?

A2: Provide vessel class and flag, crane use, SWL and radius, hook height, slewing range, heel / trim, wind and temperature conditions, power supply, control arrangement and installation position. The crane supplier should then provide the GA, structural design basis, pedestal interface and foundation reactions so the shipyard can design the supporting deck structure.

Q3: Can this crane be described or used as an offshore crane?

A3: Not by default. This page is for a shipboard marine deck crane. Offshore lifting can require additional dynamic amplification, wave / vessel-motion criteria, offboard lifting conditions, environmental loads, redundancy and dedicated class requirements. Offshore service must therefore be engineered and certified as a separate duty.
