Product Overview

This 0.5–10T marine electric trolley crane is a rail-mounted shipboard lifting appliance for maintenance and equipment handling inside pump rooms, engine rooms, machinery spaces and vessel hangars. Unlike a slewing deck crane, the hoist and trolley travel along a single beam or monorail path, allowing components such as pumps, valves, motors, machinery parts and service equipment to be lifted and transferred along a defined overhead route.

For tanker pump-room service, the electrical version can be configured for a classified hazardous area, but “explosion-proof” is not a generic property of the whole crane. The required Ex protection concept must be selected from the vessel’s hazardous-area classification, gas group, temperature class, ambient temperature and class/flag requirements. For ordinary engine-room or hangar service, a standard marine electric or manual configuration may be more appropriate. Final track arrangement, lifting height, structural supports, controls and certification scope are project-specific.

Hazardous-Area & Explosion-Protection Requirements

• Pump-room installation on a tanker can involve hazardous-area requirements. The project must state the classified zone/location and the applicable vessel electrical specification before the electric trolley crane is configured.

• Required Ex marking cannot be assumed. Gas group, temperature class, Equipment Protection Level / protection type, ambient range and certificate scheme must be defined by the project or approved electrical documentation.

• The complete electrical package—not only the hoist motor—should be checked for suitability in the specified hazardous area, including travel motor, hoist motor, brakes, control enclosure, pendant or remote control, limit devices, junction boxes, cable entries and glands where applicable.

• IEC 60092-502 is a relevant tanker electrical-installation reference, while the IEC 60079 series covers equipment for explosive atmospheres. The exact applicable editions and class interpretations should follow the vessel contract and recognized organization requirements.

• A manual trolley / manual hoist arrangement can eliminate some powered electrical equipment, but it does not automatically remove all hazardous-area or ignition-source considerations. Final suitability remains project-specific.

• Engine rooms and hangars should not automatically be described as hazardous areas. Standard marine electrical equipment may be suitable unless the vessel’s area classification requires an Ex configuration.

Rail, Hoist & Ship Structure Interface

• The monorail / single-beam track carries wheel loads from the trolley, lifted load and equipment self-weight into the ship structure; beam section, hanger/support spacing and local reinforcement must therefore be checked by the shipyard or design office.

• For curved tracks, the specified minimum rail curve radius must be coordinated with trolley wheel spacing, wheel flange geometry, drive arrangement and cable/festoon routing.

• Required lifting height, hook approach, headroom and end clearances should be confirmed from the machinery-removal route, not only from SWL.

• Travel end stops and structural stopping arrangements should be shown on the approved rail drawing. Their final design must match the trolley configuration and vessel structural interface.

• If the crane is intended for operation at sea, the operating condition, vessel motions, heel/trim criteria and any required securing or parking arrangement should be stated in the design basis.

• The supply boundary should clearly identify whether the rail beam, beam supports, ship structural foundations, electrical feeder/festoon and installation fasteners are included or shipyard-supplied.

Safety & Control Configuration

• The lifting system should be specified with an appropriate hoist brake and controlled stopping function for the selected SWL and duty. Exact brake design and redundancy are to be confirmed by the approved design.

• Upper/lower hoist limiting, trolley end travel limiting, emergency stop and overload protection should be defined in the project safety/control scope and verified during commissioning where applicable.

• For powered units, electrical protection, control voltage, cable routing, pendant or remote-control arrangement and isolation points should be coordinated with the vessel electrical system.

• Hook, wire rope or load chain, sheaves, drum, trolley wheels and other load-bearing components must be selected as part of the approved lifting appliance, not independently from the rated SWL.

• The crane should carry permanent SWL identification and the required equipment markings after approval and testing. Hazardous-area electrical components require their own approved Ex markings where applicable.

Step 1: Confirm application: tanker cargo pump room, engine room, machinery space, workshop or vessel hangar; state whether the location is a classified hazardous area.

Regulatory, Testing & Certification

For SOLAS vessels, SOLAS Regulation II-1/3-13 has applied to onboard lifting appliances since 1 January 2026. For lifting appliances installed on or after that date, the regulation requires design, construction and installation in accordance with a recognized classification society or equivalent Administration-accepted standard, followed by load testing and thorough examination before first use and permanent SWL marking. The flag Administration determines the extent of application for lifting appliances below 1,000 kg; this is relevant to the 0.5 t model.

Class and statutory scope should be confirmed before quotation because design approval, manufacturing survey, product certification, load testing, thorough examination and the ship’s lifting-appliance register may be separate deliverables. DNV-ST-0377 is one recognized shipboard lifting-appliance standard used for equipment such as engine-room cranes; equivalent class rules may apply for other societies.

FAQ

Q1: What makes a pump-room trolley crane “explosion-proof”?

A1: The designation depends on the approved hazardous-area configuration, not only on the crane name. The project must define the hazardous location, gas group, temperature class and required Ex protection / EPL. Motors, brakes, controls, enclosures, cable glands and other electrical components must then be selected and certified for that requirement where applicable.

Q2: Is the 2–30 m value a crane outreach?

A2: It should not be treated as boom-crane outreach. The source table calls it “Working Radius”, but this product travels on a single beam / monorail and separately lists a rail track radius. The 2–18 m and 2–30 m values are therefore presented as working / travel range pending confirmation from the GA drawing.

Q3: What information is needed for class approval and quotation?

A3: Provide SWL, rail route and curve radius, lifting height, hook approach, beam / support drawing, power supply, operating condition, hazardous-area classification if applicable, class / flag requirement, coating system, quantity and delivery destination.
