Product Overview

This twin-hook horizontal travelling monorail provision crane is a shipboard lifting appliance for handling provisions, stores, consumables, tools, and machinery spares from either port or starboard side. The crane does not use a slewing jib or a portal-type gantry. A moving crane beam travels horizontally along a fixed transverse runway, allowing the selected port or starboard lifting point to move from an inboard receiving position to an overboard working position approximately 3.5–5 m beyond the ship side.

The arrangement combines horizontal travel with vertical hoisting. Two independent hoisting units are provided for the port and starboard sides, while the travelling mechanism positions the crane along the transverse runway. In the normal configuration, one lifting point is used at a time; simultaneous two-hook lifting should only be permitted when it is specifically engineered, interlocked, load-rated, and approved. This layout is particularly suitable where one compact shipboard crane must serve both sides without the slewing radius and deck footprint of a pedestal-mounted provision crane.

Horizontal Travelling Arrangement & Working Principle

The fixed transverse runway is integrated with the ship structure and supports the horizontally moving crane beam or carriage. Rollers or travelling wheels carry the moving structure, while an electric travelling drive moves it toward port or starboard. Rack-and-pinion travel is commonly used on comparable monorail provision cranes, but the exact travelling mechanism, brake, rack, wheel, and support arrangement must follow the approved project GA and class design.

One hoisting unit is arranged for each ship side. For port-side handling, the crane travels horizontally toward port until the port hook reaches the approved overboard position; for starboard handling, it travels in the opposite direction and the starboard hook serves the load. After the load is hoisted vertically clear of the quay, barge, or supply boat, the crane travels inboard and lowers the load at the designated deck receiving position. The travelling motion is therefore the primary outreach movement; there is no slewing radius.

Port & Starboard Lifting Arrangement

• Independent lifting points: Port and starboard hooks are arranged at opposite working sides and are served by separate hoisting mechanisms.

• Normal operating mode: One lifting point should normally be active at a time, with electrical interlocking where specified by the approved control philosophy.

• No automatic combined capacity: Two hooks do not mean twice the SWL. Tandem or synchronized two-hook lifting is outside the normal provision-crane duty unless separately designed and approved.

• Vertical lifting: Loads should be hoisted vertically below the active hook; side pulling, dragging, or using crane travel to pull a suspended load sideways is not an intended condition.

• Hoist + travel motion: Simultaneous travelling and hoisting should be enabled only where permitted by the approved control logic, class rules, operating manual, and load path.

• Clear working zone: The travel path, overboard extension area, and area below the moving beam should be kept clear during operation.

Safety & Control System

• Hoisting upper-limit protection → stops the active hook before over-travel into the head sheave or beam structure.

• Port and starboard travel-limit switches → stop the travelling beam at the approved end positions before it reaches the structural travel boundary.

• Mechanical end stops → provide a secondary physical travel boundary and must be installed, aligned, and inspected independently of the electrical limit switches.

• Normally closed fail-safe brakes on hoisting and travelling drives → hold the load or travelling beam when power is removed and prevent uncontrolled movement.

• Overload protection → prevents further hoisting when the configured overload threshold is reached while allowing safe lowering, subject to the approved class and control design.

• Electrical interlock between the two hoisting drives → prevents simultaneous two-hook lifting in the normal operating mode.

• Emergency stop, short-circuit protection, and motor-overload protection → integrated into the electrical control system.

• Local pendant or remote push-button control → operator position should provide clear visibility of the active hook, load, ship side, supply boat or quay, and travel path.

• Optional project functions → slack-rope monitoring, wireless remote control, travel warning, floodlights, anti-collision sensing, VFD control, and low-temperature heaters can be specified when required.

Runway, Ship Structure & Installation

• The fixed runway beam and its ship connections are part of the lifting load path. Beam section, rack alignment, connection pillars, brackets, deckhouse structure, and surrounding reinforcement must be included in the approved structural design.

• Runway straightness and rack pitch through joints are critical to smooth travel. Misalignment can cause roller overload, pinion impact, motor overcurrent, and premature rack or wheel wear.

• Mechanical stoppers must be fitted exactly as shown on the approved drawing and positioned so the normal travel limit switch acts before hard contact with the stopper.

• When the crane projects overboard, the travelling mechanism and remaining support rollers carry a different load distribution. End-position strength and wheel reactions must therefore be included in the class-approved design.

• The shipyard / crane-maker scope split should be defined before quotation: fixed runway beam, support columns, local foundation, cable routing, and reinforcement may be shipyard scope or crane-supplier scope depending on the project.

• Working heel and trim must be specified by the vessel designer or class. Generic values from another crane project must not be copied into the datasheet.

Electrical, Motor & Corrosion Protection

• Electrical system: Marine AC three-phase supply with project-selected voltage and frequency → starter, contactor, protection, cable reel, control transformer, heaters, and motor data must match the final ship system.

• Motor enclosure: IP56 / insulation class F as supplied → confirm ambient temperature, deck exposure, anti-condensation heaters, cable glands, and class-required protection.

• Motor speed: To be confirmed for selected 50 Hz or 60 Hz supply → the original 1100–1140 rpm values should not be used as one universal rating for all listed frequencies.

• Surface preparation: Abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ → use the project-specified preparation standard and coating inspection procedure.

• Coating: Three-coat epoxy-based marine system as the supplied basis → primer, intermediate coat, topcoat, color, total DFT, stripe coat, and touch-up procedure remain project-specific.

• Exposed moving parts: Wire rope, sheaves, rack / pinion, rollers, pins, brakes, and bearings require compatible corrosion protection and lubrication without contaminating brake friction surfaces.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm crane type: twin-hook transverse monorail provision crane, required SWL 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 t, and whether the SWL is identical for port and starboard operation.

Regulatory, Classification & Testing

For applicable SOLAS ships, stores / provision cranes are included within the definition of onboard lifting appliances under SOLAS Regulation II-1/3-13, in force from 1 January 2026. New lifting appliances installed on or after that date are to be designed, constructed and installed to the rules of a classification society recognized by the Administration, or an equivalent accepted standard, and are subject to load testing, thorough examination, SWL marking, operation, inspection and maintenance requirements.

The final certification scope should be confirmed at quotation stage. Class approval is project-specific and depends on the vessel, flag Administration, class society, approved drawings, material / welding documentation, electrical system, safety devices, manufacturing inspection, installation survey, and load test.

FAQ

Q1: Why does this crane have two hooks if only one hook is normally used at a time?

A1: The two hoisting units are arranged for opposite ship sides. The crane travels port or starboard so the corresponding hook reaches the required overboard position. They are not intended as a synchronized two-point lifting system, and the crane SWL should not be doubled by using both hooks together.

Q2: Why is this product called a monorail / horizontal travelling provision crane rather than a gantry crane?

A2: The primary lifting structure travels horizontally along a fixed transverse runway. It does not have the portal legs and travelling bridge normally associated with a gantry crane, and it does not slew around a pedestal like a jib crane. “Monorail provision crane” is therefore the more accurate equipment category, while “horizontal travelling” clearly describes the outreach motion.

Q3: What information is required for class quotation and design approval?
