Most marine catalog navigation light housings are either injection-molded plastic (suitable for weekend vessels but questionable for bluewater use) or die-cast aluminum with powder coating (better, but coatings chip at mounting points, leading to galvanic corrosion). CNC-stamped or machined 316 housings are the specification for vessels that remain in water year-round.
The housing performs three critical functions: holding the lens, sealing the lamp socket from water intrusion, and providing a mounting interface to the vessel structure. Achieving all three requires precise attention to gasket groove dimensions, lens retention mechanisms, and mounting bolt patterns. The gasket groove is particularly critical - too shallow and the O-ring dislodges during installation; too deep and insufficient compression compromises the seal. Proper groove width and depth maintain 15-25% O-ring compression for reliable IP67 sealing.
We stamp these housings from 316 sheet because the geometry is fundamentally a formed shell with features, not a solid machined block. Stamping provides superior grain structure alignment for formed walls and offers cost-effectiveness at volume. We machine the housing and gasket components. We can coordinate sourcing of the lens and socket if you provide specifications, but optical and electrical components are typically sourced from specialized marine lighting suppliers.
What O-ring material do you recommend for the gasket?
EPDM for most marine applications. Silicone for extreme temperature ranges. Viton for fuel or chemical exposure. We design the groove for your specified O-ring material - cross-section and compression ratio requirements differ.
Can you match an existing nav light housing footprint?
With OEM part numbers or physical samples, we can reverse engineer housing dimensions. We won't reproduce branding or proprietary design features, but functional dimensions are available for replacement parts.
What's the minimum order for a custom housing design?
With stamping tooling, economics become viable around 200 pieces. For smaller quantities, we can fabricate from sheet using laser cutting + CNC bending - higher per-unit cost but no tooling investment.
Do the housings meet any specific marine certifications?
Our housings meet dimensional and material requirements of ABYC, but type approval (CE marking, USCG approval) remains the responsibility of complete light assembly manufacturers. We provide all material and dimensional documentation to support your certification process.
Can you add mounting brackets integral to the housing?
Yes. We can form or weld mounting brackets as part of the housing design. Integrated brackets provide superior strength compared to bolted-on brackets in marine environments.
