Product Overview
Marine brackets require material selection that prioritizes corrosion resistance over geometry. While structural design is important, using the wrong stainless steel grade in saltwater environments leads to unpredictable failures that FEA models cannot anticipate.
304 stainless steel develops micro-pits in seawater that act as stress concentrators. Under cyclic loading—common in marine environments—cracks initiate from these pits and propagate without warning, often during critical moments when equipment is under maximum load.
316 stainless steel effectively eliminates pitting problems due to its molybdenum content, which raises the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) from 18-20 for 304 to 24-26 for 316. According to NACE and ASTM data, a PREN of at least 23 is required for long-term seawater service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use 316 or Duplex 2205 for my marine bracket?
If your bracket sees high static loads and you're concerned about stress corrosion cracking, Duplex is worth the premium. For most mounting brackets on recreational and commercial vessels, 316 is sufficient. Duplex is harder to machine, resulting in 20-30% higher cost.
Can you anodize 316 stainless?
No—anodizing is for aluminum. For stainless steel, passivation is the standard corrosion protection treatment. Electropolish is an upgrade that provides a smoother, more corrosion-resistant surface.
What about using 17-4 PH instead of 316?
17-4 PH offers much higher strength but lower corrosion resistance. If strength is critical (e.g., high-load davit brackets where weight matters), use 17-4 PH with a corrosion-resistant coating. If corrosion resistance is primary, stick with 316.
Do you provide load testing?
We don't perform destructive load testing but can coordinate it with a testing lab if you need certified load ratings for your brackets.
Can you match an existing bracket from a sample?
Yes. Send us the bracket and we'll reverse engineer it with CMM scanning. We'll verify dimensions against scan data and provide a full drawing for your approval.
What's the maximum bracket size you can machine?
Up to 1000x600x400mm from a single block of 316 plate. Larger brackets can be fabricated from multiple pieces with precision alignment features.
